Fairewinds Energy Education shines a spotlight on the inequities and Environmental Justice Issues facing communities worldwide. Community-volunteer citizen-scientists and our scientific colleagues conduct research, analyze radioactively-contaminated areas, and present truthful data that is transparent and free to all. | During 2021 and 2022, Fairewinds Energy Education developed the Let's Measure It Program and laid thegroundwork to help contaminated communitiesstop the nuclear pollution of their schools, homes, and neighborhoods.Many communities host the world's oldest operating atomic power reactors,World War II bomb manufacturing plants, and nuclear waste dumps. Our research in this area is legacy work at Fairewinds Energy Education. During the last several years, the federal government has lessened many regulations restricting the movement of radioactivity.Most disturbingly, important federal regulators like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Department of Defense (DOD) have removed stringent government oversight on atomic power,nuclear waste, and nuclear industry and fuel manufacturing. These changes by our government make nuclear radioactivity appear innocuous and risk the health and safety of millions of children and families who live, work, or attend school near these toxic radioactive facilities.Did you know there is no technology available to clean up radiation released at nuclear and atomic sites? Radioactive microparticles of dust and dirt too small tosee migrate in the wind, weather patterns, wildfires, and the world's increasing climate catastrophes like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. Each community wework with faces tremendous Environmental Injustice Issues.Radioactivity-emanating from atomic power reactors, nuclear waste dumps, uranium mines, and nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities-is a rampant threat to communities throughout the United States and worldwide. And unfortunately, we never see, smell, or taste radiation when exposed. Instead, picture the soil we live on and everything around us-the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat-all contaminated without our knowledge. What genetic damage is this radiation doing to our children and families? What toxic damage is it doing to our blood and our organs?Now, imagine a world where we are part of the solution-individuals empowered by science to confront and expose the otherwise hidden threat of atomic radiation and exploitation in their communities as we gather and submit soil and dust samples from our backyards and public spaces. Things can quickly change when citizens are empowered by rapidly-evolving technological tools and web-based social connectivity! With this goal, Fairewinds Energy Education's Let's Measure It Program and its nuclear-site-specific projects make the data regarding the migration of radioactive materials completely available and public in an open, transparent, and democratized process. The solution to uncovering the movement of toxic radioactivity in communities is more accessible when we work together via community-based citizen-science to document the problem. Then, community-based data sleuths are community leaders, spokespeople, and stakeholders with legal standing in regulatory hearings and processes.Most of our projects serve historically marginalized communities. In the United States, Federal and State authorities have long singled out ethnic minority and indigenous communities to be unwitting hosts for atomic facilities, including nuclear bomb manufacturing factories, atomic reactor sites, and nuclear waste dumps. The federal and state governments are continually informing these communities that, in return, they will be the recipients of excellent jobs and growth in community resources and income. However, the government and corporations never informed these communities of the risks of ongoing radiation exposure.Additionally, here is what's essential: Nuclear Power Plants like Fukushima can explode during or after a meltdown and from a military attack. An atomic bomb explodes in the atmosphere, mainly releasing its radiation upwards into the jet stream, which spreads radiation globally. However, a nuclear power plantcontains 1,000 times more radiation than a bomb and occurs at ground level, highly contaminating local communities. As Fairewinds has shown in its peer reviewedwork [see below], tiny microscopic particles unable to be seen by the naked eye will be inhaled and ingested by people going about their daily lives in contaminated communities. In addition, children and women are much more radiosensitive than men, while all governments base their regulatory data upon the average white male. | Program Research:4.1. Fairewinds wrapped its Woolsey Fire Project during the fall of 2021. We began the project at the end of 2018 with Dr. Marco Kaltofen of Boston Chemical Data and PSRL.A. (Physicians for Social Responsibility LosAngeles) to assess radioactivity releases emanating from the 2018 California Woolsey Fire.On October 8, 2021, the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity published its peer-reviewed article Radioactive Microparticles Related to the Woolsey Fire in Simi Valley, CA co-authored by Dr. Marco Kaltofen, president of Boston Chemical Corp, Arnie Gundersen, chief engineer for Fairewinds Associates, Inc,and Maggie Gundersen.o https://www.fairewinds.org/peer-reviewed-papers/radioactivemicroparticles-related-to-the-woolsey-fire-in-simi-valley-ca.o https://www.fairewinds.org/woolsey-fire-collection/science-at-its-bestThe Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), an atomic reactor test lab with an undisclosed meltdown in 1959, was the epicenter of California's Woolsey Fire. Located about 35 miles northeast of Los Angeles, the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) is radioactively contaminated. The Woolsey Wildfire and subsequent wind and weather have spread toxic radiation emanating from SSFL at least 10miles from the site. In December 2020, Dr. Kaltofen, Mr. Gundersen, and Mrs.Gundersen assessed the final data to determine the possible spread of radiation tosurrounding communities with the help of community-volunteer citizen-scientists who collected critical data. This project focused on the Environmental JusticeIssues facing community stakeholders worldwide.4.2.
