Mission

The purpose of the Museum is to establish and maintain a history and music museum related to the social, political, and cultural events of and around the 1960's and the legacies of such times and events.

The Museum's mission is to preserve the history of the 1960's and Woodstock, as an educational resource of their significance in a decade of radical cultural transformation. The Museum embodies the ideals of the era by promoting peace, respect, cooperation and a connection between the planet and its people.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6

The Museum's sole corporate member is Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Inc. ("BWCA"), another Section 501(c)(3) tax exempt entity.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7A

Per the Museum's organizing documents, the power to elect all members to the Museum's Board of Directors is reserved to its sole corporate member, BWCA.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

Upon completion, a copy of the Form 990 is provided to each member of the Museum's governing body for review and comment prior to its filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The Museum has adopted a formal conflicts of interest policy which requires all Board members and officers to annually comply with the terms of the policy. Periodic reviews are conducted to ensure compliance with the conflict of interest policy. Annually, officers and directors are required to review the Conflict of Interest Policy and submit a signed document indicating they have done so and that they are in compliance with the policy. To the extent that any conflicts exist, they are immediately investigated and resolved.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The Museum does not directly compensate any of the individuals reported on Part VII of the Form 990; all amounts reported are paid by BWCA, the Museum's sole member. Any compensation paid is established by the related party's compensation committee and all decisions are memorialized in committee meeting minutes. Salary Expenditures The Museum has employees, but all payroll is paid by BWCA, the Museum's sole member. Nevertheless, these salary costs are directly expensed to the Museum and are reported in Part IX (lines 7, 8, & 9).

The Museum makes it's annual Form 990 available to the public at its main place of business; it is also available on the Internet at www.guidestar.org. The Museum's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available upon request and at management's discretion.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 1A:

The Museum's collection of artifacts for exhibition purposes ("collections") are made available to the public to encourage the understanding, enjoyment, and interpretation of the 1960's and Woodstock. Through the leadership of its Trustees and staff, the Museum strives to establish, preserve and document a permanent collection of artifacts relevant to the content of the Museum. The Museum's collections, acquired through purchase, contribution or assignment from Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Inc. ("BWCA"), are not recognized as assets on the accompanying statements of financial position. Purchases from deaccessions, resulting from donated artifacts, are reflected as increases in temporarily restricted net assets, and are used exclusively to acquire other items for the collection.

Part X, Line 2:

The following FIN-48 footnote is included in the audited financial statements of The Museum at Bethel Woods: The Museum follows guidance that clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement. This guidance provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can only be recognized in the financial statements if the position is more likely than not to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. The Museum is exempt from income tax under IRC Section 501(c)(3), though it is subject to tax on income unrelated to its exempt purpose, unless that income is otherwise excluded by the IRC. The Museum has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; to determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered uncertain tax positions. The Museum has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the accompanying financial statements.

Schedule D, Part III, Line 4

The Museum at Bethel Woods collects printed and manuscript materials, maps, photographs, motion picture film, video and audio tapes, paintings, artifacts and other items which are relevant to the popular culture, music, politics, and social history of the 1960's, with a focus on the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair and its legacy. The Museum's collection of artifacts for exhibition purposes is made available to the public to encourage the understanding, enjoyment, and interpretation of the 1960's and Woodstock. Through the leadership of its Trustees and staff, the Museum strives to establish, preserve, and document a permanent collection of artifacts.

Through the leadership of its Trustees and staff, the Museum strives to establish, preserve and document a permanent collection of artifacts relevant to the content of the Museum. The Museum's collections, acquired through purchase, contribution or assignment from Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Inc. ("BWCA"), are not recognized as assets on the accompanying statements of financial position. Purchases from deaccessions, resulting from donated artifacts, are reflected as increases in temporarily restricted net assets, and are used exclusively to acquire other items for the collection.
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The following FIN-48 footnote is included in the audited financial statements of The Museum at Bethel Woods: The Museum follows guidance that clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement. This guidance provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can only be recognized in the financial statements if the position is more likely than not to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. The Museum is exempt from income tax under IRC Section 501(c)(3), though it is subject to tax on income unrelated to its exempt purpose, unless that income is otherwise excluded by the IRC. The Museum has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; to determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered uncertain tax positions. The Museum has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the accompanying financial statements.
