“ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW World Cafe Live (WCL) is a non-profit independent music venue where artistry meets social impact. Our mission is to open doors to shared music, educational and culinary experiences that create connections, inspire learning, and celebrate who we all are. Since 2004, we have engaged over 2 million guests through ticketed concerts, interactive free education and community engagement programs, culinary experiences and original programming. In a typical year, we serve approximately 150,000 people. To date, our free music education programs have served 65,000+ participants, with a focus on Philadelphia public school students and individuals with disabilities. We continue to lead efforts to protect the vibrant ecosystem of independent venues across the U.S., providing leadership both regionally and nationally with the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and Foundation (NIVF), and we lead NIVA's Pennsylvania chapter. SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES During FY 2023, we continued to accomplish the following mission-driven goals: 1) Continue our recovery after being shuttered for 19 months due to the pandemic 2) Innovate new programs to continue to engage audiences and inspire learning 3) Support local and emerging artists in the Philadelphia region through paid opportunities 4) Connect with audiences and supporters through culinary offerings, concerts, and events 5) Generate new music-making content, placing young people in creative collaboration with teaching artists 6) Pilot workforce development programs to break down barriers and encourage under-represented groups to build careers in the live performance industry EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS During the 2022-23 school year, WCL conducted 21 Bridge Sessions for 1,406 students from Philadelphia Public Schools and participants from partner organizations like Art-Reach. Sample of sessions: "We Been Outside" with Ill Fated Natives, "Global Voices" with People of Earth, "Voices of Protest" with Arthur Thomas and the Funkitorium, and "Verses and Rhythm" with Rae.Dianz. Participating schools included Samuel Fels High, Girls High, Kensington CAPA, A. Philip Randolph Vocational High, Jules R Masterman High, Boys Latin Middle, Russell Byers Charter, The U School Charter, Friends Select, Frankford High, Academy at Palumbo High, Lawrenceville Middle, School of the Future, and Freire Middle, High, and Technical Schools. During the 2022-23 school year, WCL provided five in-depth residencies including. 1) a year-long songwriting and music producing residency at Hill-Freedman World Academy, 2) residencies with Freire High, Middle, and Tech Schools, 3) songwriting workshops with Community College of Philadelphia, 4) a trauma-informed residency at A. Philip Randolph School, in response to ongoing gun violence incidents that have tragically affected the school community, and 5) "Mighty Songs" a hybrid in-person/virtual music and songwriting residency in partnership with Mighty Writers. WCL continued its longstanding partnership with Philadelphia public high school Hill-Freedman World Academy in the sixth year of its residency. This partnership has resulted in six albums of original student music, all co-produced with WCL and Hill-Freedman Records. WCL teaching artists joined Hill-Freedman Music Technology Teacher in a year-long journey to help guide students in album-making, songwriting, music production, recording, and performance. During this school year, this process was documented by director and producer Amy Schatz. HBO Documentary Films premiered, in association with John Legend's Get Lifted Films Co., "Stand Up & Shout: Songs from a Philly High School" on HBO on November 7th. This documentary (now streaming on Max) follows the students guided by their teachers and WCL teaching artists on the explorative journey of creation and experiencing the transformative power of music.
