DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Do-It-Yourself Open Shop and Bicycle Education Program Bike Farm operated its core do-it-yourself community bicycle shop at 1810 NE 1st Avenue in Portland, Oregon, providing affordable public access to professional-grade tools, repair stands, parts, and hands-on mechanical instruction. During open shop hours, at least two experienced volunteer mechanics were on shift to guide members and drop-in patrons through repairs and maintenance on their own bicycles. Rather than performing repairs for patrons, mechanics coached participants through each step, transferring the skills needed to maintain their bicycles independently going forward. Stand time was offered to non-members for as little as $5 per hour, and participants were never turned away for lack of funds. This program served patrons across all experience levels, from first-time wrenchers to seasoned riders seeking tool access, and directly advanced the organization's educational and sustainable transportation objectives. Inclusive Access and Underrepresented Community Programming To reduce barriers in a historically male-dominated field and to serve communities underrepresented in cycling, Bike Farm operated a series of identity-centered shop nights. Alphabet Night, held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, is a volunteer bike-building shift centering underrepresented genders and sexualities in cycling. BIPOC Night, held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, is a bike-maintenance shift open to all BIPOC community members. The organization additionally offered a monthly free-access shop night during which stand fees are waived for all patrons, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to bicycle repair and education. These programs expanded meaningful access to tools, mentorship, and community for populations historically excluded from bicycle mechanics. Volunteer Development, Accessibility, and Community Engagement Bike Farm recruited, oriented, and trained new volunteer mechanics through monthly volunteer orientations and weekly Monday Volunteer Nights focused on bike-building, education, and shop organization. The organization also hosted a monthly Wheelchair Maintenance Workshop (2nd Tuesdays) extending its mechanical expertise to adaptive mobility equipment, and convened a Monthly General Meeting to support cooperative governance and member participation. Through these activities, Bike Farm sustained its all-volunteer operating model, grew its base of trained mechanics, and reinforced its role as an accepting and inclusive cooperative space welcoming to every race, economic class, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and ability$0$96,794
