“In 2024, Hanford Challenge advanced its mission to ensure a safe and effective cleanup at Hanford. Under the banner of Protect This Place, we emphasized the urgency of safeguarding Hanfords unique ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. Our advocacy helped secure a landmark Holistic Settlement Agreement, a major milestone that includes long-sought commitments to construct new temporary storage tanks to prevent further contamination. We also successfully campaigned to halt the use of High-Level Waste Reinterpretation at Hanford, ensuring that cleanup decisions prioritize safety and environmental integrity. Our legal team supported a brave whistleblower, who exposed timecard fraud. His case also highlighted the importance of worker protections and accountability at Hanford. Meanwhile, our outreach efforts reached record numbers through educational programming, public comment campaigns, and creative engagement like our second national poetry contest and the continued success of the Nuclear Waste Scholar Series. 1. Hanford Cleanup Program: Hanford Challenge exists to ensure permanent protection for the planet and its inhabitants from the effects of contamination at Hanford. In 2024, we continued to push for transparency and accountability in cleanup decisions. We celebrated the Holistic Settlement Agreement, which includes the construction of new one-million-gallon temporary storage tanksan achievement weve pursued for over 15 years. These tanks will help prevent further leakage of radioactive waste into soil and groundwater. We also submitted public comments on the 2,000-gallon Test Bed Initiative and the Hanford 5-Year Plan, and we created multiple comment guides to help the public engage in these processes. Our Protect This Place campaign emphasized the need for early Tribal consultation, robust public input, and investment in the most protective cleanup technologies. 2. Worker Advocacy Program: We continue to provide free legal representation to Hanford whistleblowers, give expert testimony on legislation related to Hanford, and prepare for environmental litigation. In 2024, we supported a whistleblower who revealed a timecard fraud scheme involving a Hanford contractor. Our legal and advocacy support helped elevate his concerns, which are now headed to trial in 2025. We also monitored labor disputes, including the lockout of Hanford security guards, and advocated for worker safety and site security. Our work remains rooted in empowering workers to speak out against fraud, waste, and unsafe practices, and in building strategic alliances to hold Hanford accountable. 3. Community Engagement Program: In 2024, Hanford Challenge expanded its public engagement through comment campaigns, educational events, and creative outreach. We hosted our second Get It While Its Hot poetry contest, receiving 34 submissions from students across the U.S., and collaborated with professors to integrate the contest into their curricula. Our Nuclear Waste Scholar Series continued to inspire with presentations from scholars and community leaders exploring nuclear history, environmental justice, and Indigenous perspectives. We participated in events like the Marshallese Nuclear Remembrance Day, Native Action Network workshops, and the International Uranium Film Festival. We also deepened relationships with Tribal Nations, including a tour of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation facilities. Through these efforts, we brought new voices into the conversation and reaffirmed our commitment to inclusive, multigenerational engagement.”

Under the banner of Protect This Place, we emphasized the urgency of safeguarding Hanfords unique ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. Our advocacy helped secure a landmark Holistic Settlement Agreement, a major milestone that includes long-sought commitments to construct new temporary storage tanks to prevent further contamination. We also successfully campaigned to halt the use of High-Level Waste Reinterpretation at Hanford, ensuring that cleanup decisions prioritize safety and environmental integrity. Our legal team supported a brave whistleblower, who exposed timecard fraud. His case also highlighted the importance of worker protections and accountability at Hanford. Meanwhile, our outreach efforts reached record numbers through educational programming, public comment campaigns, and creative engagement like our second national poetry contest and the continued success of the Nuclear Waste Scholar Series. 1. Hanford Cleanup Program: Hanford Challenge exists to ensure permanent protection for the planet and its inhabitants from the effects of contamination at Hanford. In 2024, we continued to push for transparency and accountability in cleanup decisions. We celebrated the Holistic Settlement Agreement, which includes the construction of new one-million-gallon temporary storage tanksan achievement weve pursued for over 15 years. These tanks will help prevent further leakage of radioactive waste into soil and groundwater. We also submitted public comments on the 2,000-gallon Test Bed Initiative and the Hanford 5-Year Plan, and we created multiple comment guides to help the public engage in these processes. Our Protect This Place campaign emphasized the need for early Tribal consultation, robust public input, and investment in the most protective cleanup technologies. 2. Worker Advocacy Program: We continue to provide free legal representation to Hanford whistleblowers, give expert testimony on legislation related to Hanford, and prepare for environmental litigation. In 2024, we supported a whistleblower who revealed a timecard fraud scheme involving a Hanford contractor. Our legal and advocacy support helped elevate his concerns, which are now headed to trial in 2025. We also monitored labor disputes, including the lockout of Hanford security guards, and advocated for worker safety and site security. Our work remains rooted in empowering workers to speak out against fraud, waste, and unsafe practices, and in building strategic alliances to hold Hanford accountable. 3. Community Engagement Program: In 2024, Hanford Challenge expanded its public engagement through comment campaigns, educational events, and creative outreach. We hosted our second Get It While Its Hot poetry contest, receiving 34 submissions from students across the U.S., and collaborated with professors to integrate the contest into their curricula. Our Nuclear Waste Scholar Series continued to inspire with presentations from scholars and community leaders exploring nuclear history, environmental justice, and Indigenous perspectives. We participated in events like the Marshallese Nuclear Remembrance Day, Native Action Network workshops, and the International Uranium Film Festival. We also deepened relationships with Tribal Nations, including a tour of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation facilities. Through these efforts, we brought new voices into the conversation and reaffirmed our commitment to inclusive, multigenerational engagement. |
