| In 2016, the organization continued its work in Uganda focused on the lease and sale of high efficiency biomass stoves paired with fuel sales. The fuel used was carbonized briquettes, enabling the customer to purchase alternatives to charcoal. Growing from its infancy in 2015, the leasing and fuel program sold over 10 tons of briquettes to over 100 families, while providing each with an energy saving stove. In 2016 the organization also piloted 9 different types of stoves to select the best performing and best accepted stove in Kampala, Uganda. The organization then narrowed down the product line to just the top 3 selling stoves to continue to promote. In addition to leasing 100 stoves, over 500 more stoves were sold outright to women through marketing efforts in market places, business to business marketing, expos and other direct sales methods. These cookstoves use the fuel, emit the smoke & cook twice as fast as traditional methods, helping to mitigate the death and disease attributed to cooking over open fires. 100% of the stoves were either leased or sold outright, bolstering the organizations aim of working towards greater financial sustainability. To scale to rural areas in Uganda and replicate the model used in Sudan, marketing activities were undertaken in a refugee camp in Western Uganda, and the ground work has been laid for the introduction of wood stoves in these areas in 2017. In addition to stove sales, the organization also sold 50 solar lights to further reduce indoor air pollution from kerosene lanterns which are traditionally used for lighting. Some of these lights also have the provision for charging a phone, saving families money on phone charging expenses. The local operations in Uganda grew from 1 to 10 staff in 2016, including 8 marketers and 1 driver. The team moved into a new and larger office space to accommodate more products, stock and staff, as well as purchased a vehicle for delivering products to clients. | $129,529 | - |
