Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sdsg promotes equitable and ecologically sound approaches to poverty reduction through sustainable use of natural resources.

SDSG uses research, practice, and teaching to provide guidance to communities, companies, and governments on law and policy frameworks that advance best practices for sustainable energy and natural resource development. Our vision is a future where resource development respects human rights, aligns with the economic and social objectives of local communities, and protects the natural environment.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
SDSG 2020 Project Accomplishments: BIOCHAR RESEARCH: SDSG supervised a research project focused on biochar production in mine remediation. CONTAINER PROJECT: This project, based on our prior feasibility study, converted a shipping container into an energy-efficient office space in Gunnison County. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (ESIA) RESEARCH AND GUIDANCE FOR GOVERNMENTS: SDSG worked with the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) Secretariat to review ESIA requirements and related provisions in contracts for 10 jurisdictions and the law and policy frameworks of more than 55 jurisdictions. We coauthored the 2020 publication: "Guidance for Governments: Improving Legal Frameworks for Environmental and Social impact Assessment and Management for the Mining Sector." SDSG participated in multiple webinars to launch the guidance document and co-facilitated an online dialogue on the Governance of Extractive Industries (GOXI) platform in collaboration with IGF, Transparency International, and Colorado School of Mines. GUNNISON SUTAINABLE LIVING LIBRARY: This project makes data pertaining to natural resources and sustainability in the Gunnison Basin freely available to the public for research and educational purposes at: http://sustainablelibrary.org/. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR THE MINING SECTOR AND THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs): SDSG completed assessment and reports for two international standard setting bodies for the mining sector to evaluate and enhance their alignment with the SDGs. INTERGOVERNMENTAL FORUM ON MINING, MINERALS, METALS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (IGF) ASSESSMENT AND CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT: SDSG worked with the IGF Secretariat in 2020 to complete a follow-up IGF Mining Policy Framework (MPF) Assessment for Uganda and to review and provide recommendations on Uganda's Draft Mining and Minerals Bill. This work identified opportunities to enhance alignment with the MPF and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTERNATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION MODEL MINE DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT PROJECT: SDSG provides support to the International Bar Association (IBA) Mining Law Committee Model Mine Development Agreement (MMDA) Project, a tool to optimize sustainable development outcomes of mine development agreements. SDSG manages the MMDA Project website, where the MMDA is now freely available to the public in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and Russian at www.MMDAProject.org. INTERNSHIP AND LAW FELLOWS PROGRAM: SDSG regularly hosts and supervises interns from academic institutions in Colorado and around the world. Interns and law fellows assist with research and memo writing, drafts of publications, research to update SDSG's website and course lectures, and implementation of SDSG projects. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION PERU: SDSG is collaborating with the Colorado School of Mines on a three-year National Science Foundation-funded study of gold supply chains in Peru. The multi-disciplinary study seeks to identify variables that contribute to challenging issues such as illicit financial flows and human trafficking while identifying opportunities to address these issues and promote sustainable development. SDSG completed legal research for the study and led production of a related Colorado School of Mines-funded report "Case Study: Peru's Environmental and Social Management in the Gold Mining Sector in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic," published by GOXI in 2020 at: https://goxi.org/resource/perus-environmental-and-social-management-gold-mining-sector-midst-covid-19-pandemic. "NEW TECH, NEW DEAL" MONGOLIA PROJECT: This project looked at the impacts of new technology in the mining sector on sustainable development. The project is led by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), IGF, Mining Shared Value (an initiative of Engineers Without Borders Canada), and the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment. SDSG contributed to the Mongolia study, based on a series of almost 50 interviews conducted by Ulaanbaatar-based Council for Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (CSS) with stakeholders representing companies, suppliers, workers, communities, nongovernmental organizations, national government ministries and local governments in Mongolia. The New Tech, New Deal Mongolia report was launched in December 2020. See: https://montsame.mn/en/read/248402. RECYCLING PROJECT: SDSG worked with stakeholders across Gunnison County to assess the viability of a regional recycling franchise and the feasibility of creating new markets for materials. This innovative project, motivated by a current shift in recycling markets, could boost economic development in Colorado's western slope communities. RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATION UNDER MUNICIPAL ENERGY AGENCY OF NEBRASKA (MEAN) CONTRACTS: This project researched opportunities and obstacles for renewable energy generation in Colorado under Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) Contracts. The reports and related research are available at https://www.sdsg.org/mean-study. In 2020 SDSG published the report "The Toll Beyond Coal: Who Bears the Cost of Coal Plant Decommissioning and Coal Ash Disposal? A Case Study of the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska" available at: https://www.sdsg.org/thetollbeyondcoal. UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA ONLINE COURSES AND COLLABORATIONS: SDSG teaches the online course "The Emerging International Framework for Development of Mineral Resources" at the University of Arizona. We are developing a new course on Community Engagement and Sustainable Development. See https://minerals.arizona.edu/lawcourse. SDSG co-facilitated the University of Arizona Mining Law Summit 2020, "New Frontiers in Community Engagement and Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources. Access materials and recordings from this one-day event at: https://law.arizona.edu/mining-law-summit. Panels focused on responsible mining and the green energy transition, use of technology to respond to community concerns, and good practices in community engagement.$0$149,710
