Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center's Form 990 is prepared by an independent public accounting firm with the assistance of the Center's financial staff. All members of the board of directors have the opportunity to review the Form 990. Once any changes are made and the draft is approved, the Form 990 is filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The purpose of the conflict of interest policy is to protect the interest of the corporation when it is contemplating entering into a transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of an officer or director of the corporation or might result in a possible excess benefit transaction. This policy is intended to supplement but not replace any applicable state and federal laws governing conflict of interest applicable to nonprofit and charitable organizations. In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, an interested person must disclose the existence of the financial interest and all material facts to the directors and to members of any committees with governing board delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangement. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person, the board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. The interested person shall not be present for or participate in such determination. Each Director, officer and member of a committee with governing board delegated powers shall sign a statement which affirms such person has received a copy of the policy, understands the policy, and agrees to comply with the policy. The Organization conducts periodic reviews to ensure that no interested persons are in violation of the conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The board reviews the compensation for the President and uses comparability data to determine that the compensation is appropriate for the individual's involvement, experience, and ability. The President uses a similar process in assessing compensation for all other employees.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Norman B. Levanthal Map & Education Center makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

The audit process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

The Center's endowment consists of two funds established for specific annual educational programming purposes. These funds include both donor-restricted funds and funds designated by the Board of Directors for specific purposes.

Part X, Line 2:

The Center has adopted the provisions of ASC 740, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes. Accordingly, management has evaluated the Center's tax positions and concluded the Center had maintained its tax-exempt status, does not have any significant unrelated business income and had taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment or disclosure in the financial statements. Any interest and penalties would be recorded in income tax expense. With few exceptions, the Center is no longer subject to income tax examinations by the U.S. federal or state tax authorities for years before 2022. While the Center is a tax-exempt charitable organization, the Center may still be subject to taxes on certain unrelated business income activity, depending on the facts and circumstances surrounding the income-producing activity.

IRS990/Desc0Collections: The Center stewards the cartographic collections of the Boston Public Library, encompassing a quarter million maps and other objects, ensuring the preservation, cataloging, organization and digitization of the collection. Areas of particular strength are our four "Collections of Distinction": Boston & New England, the American Revolutionary era, urban maps and maritime maps. Public access is a major part of our mission and we offer reference services for the collection including assistance in geographic information services (GIS) and support fellowships to carry out research in the collection to develop new scholarship. The Center also has an extensive digital resources available on our website for public and educational use, increasing access to our collections and educational materials. Our digital collection includes 12,000 digitized maps including our American Revolutionary War era cross-institutional collection of more than 2,000 digitized maps from partner institutions such as the British Library and Library of Congress. Many digitized maps have been georeferenced, enabling overlays of modern maps, and some are also mosaicked and tiled to enhance digital access. This includes maps from our urban atlas collection, which can be explored as overlays of different maps over time using our mobile app/web tool Atlascope. In addition, all past and current exhibitions are available in digital form on our website. Digitized material from our collections has been used in numerous web and print publications and digital humanities projects.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Exhibitions and Public Outreach: The Center has presented 26 exhibitions since 2004. Exhibitions have traveled to New York, Washington DC, and Williamsburg as well as to other locations within the city of Boston. Showcasing items from the collection, exhibitions have highlighted such important subjects as the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods, 19th and 20th century immigration, voting patterns and rights, women's role in cartography, mapping of climate patterns, urban green spaces and U.S. westward expansion in the 19th century. Audiences upwards of 60,000 attend each gallery exhibition, including area residents, library patrons, tourists, researchers, students and teachers. All exhibitions are accompanied by a series of lectures and panel discussions with scholars and authors that explore themes related to the exhibition, with emphasis on relevance to contemporary issues. In addition, local micro-history and geography are explored in community events that use our Atlascope tool. Community partnerships add breadth and depth to both public and educational program offerings, including partnerships with faculty from area universities, and staff of municipal and non-profit organizations.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Education Outreach: The Center is recognized as a national leader in innovative education programs that use cartographic materials and methods. Our K-12 programs are based in best practices for primary sources and inquiry-based teaching and fulfill local and national standards. These programs harness the power of maps and mapping to make a broad range of topics come alive in the K-12 classroom and onsite. The center offers professional development for educators via institutes, workshops and fellowships. We develop map sets and curriculum materials, often in collaboration with teacher advisors and fellows. Our online resources include a wide variety of maps sets, lesson plans and tools to help teacher use maps effectively in their classrooms. (Continued on Schedule O)Half of our educational service is to the Boston public schools, and to these and to other schools in need, education programs are offered free of charge.
