| Annual Conference: In October 2024, Animal Grantmakers hosted its 25th annual conference in Toronto, with over 90 participants. In addition to bringing together animal funders and advocates from across North America and Europe, the convening focused on cross-border collaborations making a difference for animals and celebrated Animal Grantmakers' 25th anniversary. The conference kicked off with day trips to: The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, home to more than 100 animals; and New School Foods, an alternative protein company developing plant-based salmon. It then officially began that evening with a reception featuring a presentation from Jo-Anne McArthur, a Canadian photojournalist whose work is documenting our complex relationship with animals around the globe. Over the next two days, funders from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. heard from over 40 experts from academia, science, law, and advocacy speaking on topics consequential to wild, companion, farmed, and laboratory animals. Highlights included: welcome remarks from Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (Member of Canadian Parliament) on building bridges to help animals in Canada and the U.S.; a discussion on grantees' perceptions of grantmakers; a session on working with Indigenous communities featuring an all-Indigenous panel; a keynote from American philosopher Martha Nussbaum on a new ethical framework for animals (followed by an interactive discussion); TED-inspired Talks featuring five animal activists working in Canada on such topics as ending the Canadian seal hunt and a whale sanctuary under development in Port Hilford Bay, Nova Scotia (being designed to serve as the gold standard for many others around the world to be modeled after); a gala dinner featuring the founders of Animal Grantmakers and a presentation from Tim Burkhart on Yellowstone to Yukon's vision for thriving wildlife; a live Community Cats Podcast; the Third Annual Melanie Anderson Lifetime Excellence in Animal Protection (LEAP) Award honoring two Canadian activists, Liz White (Animal Alliance of Canada) and Rob Laidlaw (Zoocheck), who also gave a Ted-style Talk; and a discussion of Animal Grantmakers' special 25th anniversary report, Animal Philanthropy in the United States, led by its author, Dr. Andrew Rowan, a co-founder of Animal Grantmakers. The conference closed with a complimentary field trip to the Toronto Humane Society. Reflecting Animal Grantmakers' commitment to ensuring that diverse voices and perspectives are heard, more than 25% of speakers identified as BIPOC. The conference also attracted funding from 10 sponsors. | $124,896 | $182,073 |
