“Part i, line 1 & part iii, line 1: the mission of participant, inc. Is to serve artists through in-depth consideration, presentation, and the publishing of critical writing; and to introduce the work into public contexts through exhibitions, screenings, performances, and education programs. The organization's mission builds upon alternative space methodologies, particularly a commitment to interdisciplinary, intergenerational exhibition making, and an insistence upon placing together, in one space, work from various mediums - encouraging the coexistence of visual and time-based art.”

“Part iii, line 4a:we began 2018 with a residency and performances by keyon gaskin, [a swatch of lavender]: a self portrait, commissioned and presented in partnership with gibney dance from january 11-14, 2018. This was followed by a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by jayne county, paranoia paradise, curated by michael fox from february 4 - march 18, 2018. We launched our friends edition kathe burkhart, small hole: from the liz taylor series (ash wednesday) on sunday, february 11, 2018 and hosted our first in a dinner series with mbhave: the artist cooks on february 26, 2018. This was followed by a solo exhibition of collages and an inhabited sculpture by narcissister, studies for participatory sculpture, which remained on view from april 20 - may 6, 2018. Lyle ashton harris returned to performance on the opening night of his solo exhibition aka daddy, which remained on view from may 13 through june 24, 2018; he was joined in conversation with khary simon on june 24, 2018. We then presented the first major solo exhibition by tuesday smillie, reflecting light into the unshadow from july 1 - august 5, 2018. This was followed by an august residency period for the project, a new job to unwork at, organized by guest curators andrew kachel and clara lopez menendez. It included the following public programs and workshops, all taking place in august and september 2018: punching songs together, a musical performance by amelia bande??with susan karabush, neyza honore, jenno snyder, and tina zavitzanos; coop fund?hosting the first of two workshops that gave an introduction to coop fund, detailing how it was started, and how it operates now; a screening curated by karl mccool including films by joann elam, everyday people (rough cut), 1978-90 and kevin jerome everson, company line, 2009; and we presented a conversation between kathi weeks, professor of gender, sexuality and feminist studies at duke university and author of the problem with work: feminism, marxism, antiwork politics and postwork imaginaries, and lise soskolne, artist and core organizer of working artists and the greater economy (w.a.g.e.), a new york-based activist organization. ? This residency period was followed by the group exhibition, a new job to unwork at, curated by andrew kachel and clara lopez menendez, on view from september 9 - october 14, 2018. During the exhibition's run, public programs included an artist talk by rafa esparza; readings in conjunction with the launch of glq journal on queer commons; and a play by valerie lynn werder, a notable fiction. Sunday, october 14, 2018. In october 2018, we organized and hosted public programs in conjunction with the exhibition the conditions of being art, pat hearn gallery and american fine arts, co. Including a screening and talk by patterson beckwith regarding art club 2000; a skype lecture by julia scher; a performance by simon leung; and an artist talk with tishan hsu. Also on october 28, 2018, we hosted a book launch and viewing of related ephemera, with readings by john brattin and clara lopez menendez regarding the publication ellen cantor, a history of the world as it has become known to me. This was followed by breaking wave (november 4 - 18, 2018), a benefit exhibition on the occasion of participant's 16th anniversary. With works by stephen andrews, michel auder, itziar barrio, f.p.
