Mission

Our mission is to unite people, resources and organizations to improve lives in washington county. The united way of washington county envisions a community where everyone achieves their human potential through education, financial stability and healthy lives.

Our mission is to recruit and collaborate with people, organizations, and businesses to identify critical local needs and raise funds annually to invest in the local programs and services that are addressing those needs and having a positive impact in washington county. Particular attention is focused on programs addressing financial stability, education, health, and emergency needs.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The irs form 990 is completed by our independent auditor with input from the united way of washington county's staff. Once the form is completed, the senior staff of the united way reviews the form for accuracy and it is presented to the board of directors at the next meeting for review. Any questions/concerns are sent back to the unted way. Once all isssues are resolved or if no changes are required the auditor sends the return to the united way for filing.

The conflict of interest policy is reviewed annually and is signed by each board member at the annual board meeting. All new staff and board members are formally oriented to the policy upon joining the organization. Should a potential conflict of interest arise procedures outlined in the policy are followed. During board meetings if there is a conflict, the member abstains from voting, which is noted in the minutes.

The board of directors approves the compensation based on the recommendation of the personnel and finance committees. Fair and reasonable compensation is determined by reviewing at least three relevant and current comparable united ways and other nonprofit organizations. Local, regional and national compensation surveys on organizations similar in size and income are consulted to determine compensation.

The united way of washington county utilizes financial accounting standards board (fasb) accounting standards codification (asc) 740-10, accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes. Asc 740-10 prescribes a recognition threshold of more- likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by the appropriate taxing authority. Measurement of the tax uncertainty occurs if the recognition threshold has been met. The standard also provides guidance on derecogniton, classification, interest and penalties, accounting in interim periods, disclosure, and transition. Management has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions or unrecognized tax benefits and there is no material impact on the financial statements. In addition, there were no penalties or interest recognized on the statement of activity. The organization's asc 740-10 evaluation was performed for the tax years 2010 through 2013, which are the years that remain subject to examination by the internal revenue service and various state agencies as of june 30, 2014.
