Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The organization has regular "a" members, life "a" members, disabled "a" members, probationary members, fire police probationary member, fire police "a" members, fire police "b" members and military service members. Regular "a" members take part in the fire company, answer alarms, attends training/drills, and perform any other function of the fire company as required. Regular "a" members may hold office, make motions, and have a vote. Life members are any regular "a" members in good standing who have accumulated a total of twenty-five years membership. The members will have a vote and be entitled to all of the benefits and priviledges that are granted to regular "a" members. Disabled "a" members are any regular "a" member who may become physically disabled and submits a letter from a qualified licensed physician that states the member cannot perform the duties of a firefighter, may apply by letter to the board of directors for disabled "a" member status. The member shall be considered a regular "a" member for all intents and purposes. Regular "b" members shall be unlimited in number, shall not have a vote or the power to make a motion, shall not hold office, but may voice their opinions at meetings. Regular "b" members may answer alarms, attend training/drills, and perform any other function of the fire company as required. Regular "b" members may be elevated to regular "a" membership by meeting the necessary requirements. Members who have been regular "b" members for five consecutive years will be dismissed from the fire company at the november reclassification meeting of the fifth year. Disabled "b" member is any regular "b" member who may become physically disabled, and submits a letter from a qualified licensed physician that states the member cannot perform the duties of a firefighter or fire police, may apply by letter to the board of directors for disabled "b" member status. The member shall be considered a regular "b" member for all intents and purposes. Probationary members must serve a minimum of two years on probation. They are not permitted to vote, make motions, or hold office, but may voice their opinions at meetings. Probationary members may answer alarms, attend training/drills, and perform any other function of the fire company as required. After the one year probationary period has been completed, the "a" members shall vote at the next monthly meeting. If the first year vote is affirmative, the member shall maintain probationary status for one additional year. At the completion of the second year, at the next monthly meeting, the board of directors shall reclassify the probationary member as regular "a," extended probationary, or dismissed. The board of directors may extend the probationary period of the member up to a maximum of one additional year. The dismissed member has the right to file a written appeal to the board of directors. Fire police probationary members shall not perform active firefighting duties. Fire police p members may answer alarms, attend training/drills, and perform any other function of the fire company as required. Fire police "a" members take an active part in the fire company, answers alarms, attend training/drills, and performs any other function of the fire company as required. Fire police "a" members may hold an elected office except fire officer, make motions and have a vote. Fire police "a" members shall not perform active firefighting duties. Fire police "b" members shall be unlimited in number, shall not have a vote or the power to make a motion, shall not hold office, but may voice their opinions at meetings. Fire police "b" members may be elevated to fire police "a" member status by meeting the necessary requirements. Fire police "b" members shall not perform active firefighting duties.
