Viking Cafe - Ms. Kristen BartaIn conjunction with skills taught in the classroom, learning support students will run a coffee cart for the teachers/staff in the Middle School. Once a week, students will take orders from each staff member, tally the amount of supplies they need, create a bill for the staff, deliver the coffee, and take care of maintenance and ordering supplies, two students will be in charge of helping manage the cart financially and will keep track of the funds going out and the net profit. Students will also take snack orders on Fridays. Beverages include, but are not limited to, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Tapping Maple Trees to make syrup - Mr. Mike SaxionMr. Saxion is incorporating the process of making maple syrup into his first and second grade curriculum. The students will be involved in the tapping of the trees, collection of the sugar water, and the entire process of making syrup. Beginning in March, parents/grandparents with knowledge of the process will work with the students to educate them all thats involved and assist them with collecting and processing the raw liquid. If the students can enjoy a pancake breakfast with the syrup they made, the project will be considered a success. FCS Experiment: growing bacteria - Ms. Jamie Biller and Ms. Brittany SmithThe purpose of this Grant is to allow an experiment for family and consumer science students to find out which locations in the kitchen and types of foods contains the greatest amount of bacteria. Students will hypothesis within their lab groups which items they believe to contain the most bacteria. Then they will collect and label samples from different locations in the kitchen such as countertops, tables, handles, and floors or other items such as the hands and cooked vs. uncooked foods. We will be looking at collected bacteria in a petri dish filled with agar. During each day of the unit, students will report on what the samples look like and how much growth is seen within the colonies. The incubator keeps the petri dishes at an optimal temperature for the bacteria growth, similar to the food danger zone. Technology intergration for FCS - Ms. Jamie BillerTwo sets of curricular supplements will be purchased. One addresses the area of child development. The product description designates activities that adress child development and parenting topics including infant communication through sign language and selection of appropriate media and literature for children. The second set addresses food safety and sanitation through topics such as hygiene, food sourcing, and can reinforce servsafe principlas and ideas. This will be integrated immediately after purchase in the Middle School and will be integrated as the high school students receive their devices.
