Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The permanently restricted net assets represent an endowment established to recognize gifts and bequests that were originally made to the tuberculosis league of pittsburgh (forerunner of breathe). The tuberculosis league of pittsburgh used a portion of the funds for construction of a hospital to care for tuberculosis patients. The hospital and auxiliary equipment were later sold and the proceeds were returned to breathe. Investment income or realized and unrealized gains and losses on permanently restricted net assets, which are not subject to donor imposed restrictions, are classified as board designated unrestricted net assets. The board designated unrestricted net assets are utilized at the discretion of the board.

PART X, LINE 2:

The financial accounting standards board accounting standards codification on income taxes clarifies recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure relating to uncertain tax positions. Breathe evaluates tax positions for recognition by determining whether evidence indicates that it is more likely than not that a position will be sustained if examined by taxing authorities. As of june 30, 2016 and 2015, breathe is unaware of any unrecognized tax benefits or uncertain tax positions. Breathe's federal tax returns for tax years 2013 and beyond remain subject to examination by the internal revenue service.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0TOBACCO PREVENTION AND CESSATION - SCHOOL PREVENTION - THE SCHOOL ANTI-TOBACCO PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF AS PART OF A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO TOBACCO AND NICOTINE PREVENTION EDUCATION. THE SCHOOL ANTI-SMOKING PROGRAM IS CUSTOMIZED ACROSS GRADE LEVELS, MAKING IT APPLICABLE FROM ELEMENTARY TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. WE ADDRESS ALL ASPECTS OF TOBACCO AND NICOTINE USE, INCLUDING CIGARETTES, SMOKELESS TOBACCO, ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES, HOOKAH, CIGARS, AND PIPES. USING A VARIETY OF VISUALS, STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS THAT TOBACCO CAN HAVE ON THEIR ENTIRE BODY. APPROXIMATELY 2,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE SCHOOL ANTI-TOBACCO PROGRAM. CESSATION- SMOKELESS SATURDAY IS AN ALTERNATIVE OR COMPLEMENT TO FINE OR SUSPENSION FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN FOUND WITH TOBACCO OR NICOTINE PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. IT IS A HALF-DAY, DIVERSIONARY PROGRAM THAT INFORMS STUDENTS ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR TOBACCO USE AND TEACHES THEM HOW TO QUIT. STUDENTS ARE REFERRED TO THE PROGRAM BY SCHOOL PERSONNEL, DISTRICT JUDGES, OR PARENTS. SMOKELESS SATURDAY WAS HELD AT 17 SITES AND SERVED 309 STUDENTS IN THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR. SMOKE FREE FOR LIFE IS AN EIGHT-SESSION ADULT CESSATION PROGRAM THAT CAN BE HELD IN THE COMMUNITY OR WORKPLACE. IT ADDRESSES EVERY ASPECT OF TOBACCO USE, AND TEACHES PARTICIPANTS HOW TO QUIT AND REMAIN TOBACCO FREE FOR A LIFETIME. 16 FACILITATORS WERE TRAINED TO CONDUCT SMOKE FREE FOR LIFE CLASSES, WHILE APPROXIMATELY 100 PARTICIPANTS WENT THROUGH THE SMOKE FREE FOR LIFE CESSATION PROGRAM IN THE 2015-2016 FISCAL YEAR. THROUGH GENERAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS, CESSATION SERVICES WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO MORE THAN 1,200 WESTERN PENNSYLVANIANS.
