Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

In 2020, the theatre experienced unprecedented challenges with the state-sanctioned closing of in person production operations due to the worldwide pandemic. Management immediately prepared for a long-term crisis and implemented expense-saving cuts, including salary cuts, staff furloughs, rent cuts, work-at-home requirements, extensive budget reductions, and temporary suspension of its subscription and capital campaigns. Management assessed altered revenue projections and pivoted to alternative sources of income, including increased fundraising, nontheatrical production department revenue streams, on-line paid programming, outside special events, and acquisition of state and federal relief grants and loans. The theatre is currently using the crisis to its advantage by building and diversifying the board of directors, adding nine new directors and eight new members to the advisory council. Thanks to the multi-year grant from ralla klepak foundation, the theatre has increased and expanded its on-line education programming for students, doubled its programming with over seven community organizations, and started planning for new accessibility elements for the disabled once the theatre reopens. The theatre is assessing its board governance structure, increasing board involvement through a robust committee reorganization, and building the board's fundraising capabilities. The theatre has presented numerous on-line and paid streaming concerts and plays, presented informational virtual presentations, and increased its communication with its core patrons. The theatre's plan is to restart its new building capital campaign in january 2021, restart its fy 2021-2022 subscription campaign in march 2021, and present on-line programming and special events throughout the winter, spring, and summer. Although the theatre will maintain staff salary reductions for the foreseeable future, once state-imposed restrictions are incrementally limited, the theatre will, if possible, pursue in-person paid performances - at first outside and then in the theatre. The theatre will continue to seek a federal and state relief for nonprofits and stay focused on preparing for a healthy fiscal return to full operation later in 2021. The plan above is subject to change based on continued uncertainties related to the pandemic.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The theatre has adopted a strategy of long-term growth through the investment of funds received in a certificate of deposit. Endowment assets include those assets of donor-restricted funds that the theatre must hold in perpetuity or for a donor-specified period. The theatre is currently focused on long-term growth of the endowment fund and has not made any expenditures from the fund.
