Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

Other key achievements in 2024: -fellows of the child neurology society (fcns): over 56 cns members earned the prestigious fcns designation, recognizing their dedication and expertise within the field. -increased member attendance at the annual meeting: participation from active members surged, climbing from 39% in 2023 to 47% in 2024. A clear indicator of the value members find in connecting and learning together. -launch of our learning management system (lms): through our new lms platform, we offered 79 cme credits and issued more than 750 certificates across 24 educational offerings, expanding opportunities for professional growth. -research grant partnership: in collaboration with the pediatric epilepsy research foundation (perf), we supported efforts that awarded $350,000 in research grants funded by perf to support promising child neurology researchers. -enhanced career center: our revamped career center introduced new features for both job seekers and employers, leading to increased job postings and stronger engagement across the platform. Financial overview: cns relies on the generosity of individual donors, corporate partnerships, grants, event registration, and membership dues to fund its programs and activities. The organization maintains a transparent and responsible financial approach, allocating resources to support its mission-driven initiatives.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The child neurology education endowment was established for the purpose of providing travel awards and other educational awards at the organization's annual meeting.

PART X, LINE 2:

Asc 740 disclosure from audited financial statements: the society is classified as a tax-exempt society under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is subject to federal and state income tax only on net unrelated business income. The society generates unrelated business income from its publications and other services. Cash payments for income taxes were $0 in 2024 and 2023. The society reviews income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in income tax returns to determine if there are any income tax uncertainties. This includes positions that the entity is exempt from income taxes or not subject to income taxes on unrelated business income. The society recognizes tax benefits from uncertain tax positions only if it is more likely than not that the tax positions will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the positions. The society has identified no significant income tax uncertainties.

Schedule D, Part V

There was a change to endowment funds due to the board approved removal of the permanent restriction on $233,027 previously designated as board-restricted funding. This restriction was originally in place without a clear record of its intended allocation. During the december 16, 2024, board meeting, the board unanimously voted to lift this restriction.
