“In the November 2018 general election, the residents of the Town of Whiteland voted in favor of having the Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. (WVFD) become part of the Town's municipal governemnt. Accordingly, WVFD transitioned from being a separate entity to being the Town's fire department in 2019. As such, 2019 was the last year WVFD was an independent entity, and the last year for it to file a Form 990.”
“Before the president signs the Form 990, it is presented for review with the other board members.”
“Upon request from any member of the public, the board will provide a copy of the governing documents, Form 990, or any other releaseable information, including the number of runs, types of runs, volunteer roster, etc. However, the board does not release any personal identifiers or any other confidential information related to its members or anyone else.”
“The members elect the governing board, so they have the power to change the board, and therefore change the direction that the Fire Department could take. Obviously, any change in the character of the board would still be controlled to a very large extent by state statutes governing volunteer fire departments, as well as the oversight provided by the local Fire District that contracts with the Taxpayer.”
