The cedar mills gun club board and members worked hard in 2024 by volunteering their time to raise and provide funds for area groups that also serve the community and a space for these groups to hold events, and the range is available for their use when needed. Our club works with the mcleod and meeker sheriffs departments as well as the hutchinson police to provide a place for training and meetings. The club also provides donations to many groups, such as the mcleod chapter relay for life teams, hutchinson ffa, deer hunter's association, the mcleod cutters turkey association, mcleod and meeker 4-h extensions, as well as the local 4-h clubs. We have also held many benefits at the club to help raise funds for local community members from hutchinson and other surrounding communities. The funds for supporting these groups are gained by hosting "pancake brunches," which we hold on the 3rd sunday of each month. We also have a family fun day in mid-january, where we have bingo and door prizes, and kids can come and build wood duck houses for free to put up around their properties. Another event that is held in february to raise funds for the club to donate is a chicken and rib nite meal, where members and non- members can come out and enjoy a meal, as well as an evening of fun and raffle prizes. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is our annual fish fry, held last friday in march. Many of our members and their families volunteer their time for these events, and this year at the annual fish fry, we served over 1500 people the club provides facilities for the dnr-sponsored "youth firearms safety" courses, which are hosted twice yearly in april and september. Several club members and other dnr-certified instructors host these courses. All this time is volunteered and is greatly appreciated by the students, parents, guardians, the club, and the dnr. Without this course, youth would not be trained and firearm certified and would be unable to continue the hunting tradition. This program has a track record of reducing accidents and promoting outdoor sports. The club provides a place for the cedar mills township to hold meetings and some other groups as needed. We support and assist the ridgewater college and hutchinson charter school shooting sports, and there has been some discussion about working with a few other area high schools to help and assist them so their trap teams have a place to practice as well. The cedar mills lions club also has its monthly meetings and community events at the clubhouse. Some improvements were made as well in 2024. This year, the board members worked on the area behind the clubhouse to add cement and better rain runoff areas near the "fry area" of the clubhouse so that in the spring, when we hold our annual fish fry, there is a better space to put the refrigeration trailers, dumpster, and propane truck to run the fryers. The board also does regular maintenance to update the grounds with new backstops and items that need repair. Along with this, the board and some members also added a couple of roof areas to the range in the pistol bay, and the trap shooting area to provide shelter from the sun and other elements of minnesota weather while members are out enjoying time on the range.
