Profile

Aacom provides leadership for the osteopathic medical education community by promoting excellence in medical education, research, and service, and by fostering innovation and quality across the continuum of osteopathic medical education to improve the health of the american public. Aacom was founded in 1898 to lend support and assistance to the nation's osteopathic medical schools, and to serve as a unifying voice for osteopathic medical education. Having grown from a handful of college administrators a century ago, the organization today represents the administration, faculty, and students of all of the osteopathic medical colleges in the united states. The association, guided by its board of deans and various other member councils and committees, is actively involved in all areas of osteopathic medical education.

All actions taken by the committee are reported to the board of deans at its next meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

Aacom has two classes of members: college members and affiliate members. Each dean/chief academic officer of college members is appointed to the board of deans. The voting college members have the rights to 1) approve dues and fees, 2) suspend membership, 3) change bylaws, and 4) vote for the officers of the board of deans.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Aacom finance department works with the tax preparer in preparing draft 990. The draft is first reviewed by the senior vice president of finance & operations, then presented to the president/ceo and audit committee for review and approval. It is possible the audit committee will suggest changes. The approved draft 990 is sent to all board of deans members for review prior to filing with the irs. The final form will reflect feedback from board members as appropriate.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members complete an inquiry/action form annually where potential conflicts of interest are reported. Perceived or actual conflicts of interest are addressed with board members by the ethics committee chair. The ethics committee meetings are held to review any potential conflicts of interest brought to the attention of the ethic committee by the ethics committee chair. The board member with a potential conflict of interest must recuse himself or herself from the vote on the matter. The ethics committee documents the potential conflicts, the results of their review, and disposition of the conflict are reported to the board of deans.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

During the fiscal year ended june 30, 2025, the board of deans engaged an outside compensation expert to conduct a review of its ceo compensation by reviewing data available for this role in comparable organizations (nonprofits in the dc area, colleges of osteopathic medicine across the united states). This compensation analysis was reviewed by the chair of the board and the executive committee before the recommended compensation change took effective on july 1st, 2025. The ceo receives an annual increase. Aacom also uses an independent compensation expert to review compensation for each job role every two to three years (the last review was completed in june 2024). New positions are also externally priced by the same independent compensation expert using a similar methodology.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are currently made available to the public upon request for the same period of disclosure as set for in section 6104(d).
