In 2020, special olympics hawaii's (sohi) operations were significantly impacted by covid-19. All in person programming and fundraising activities were cancelled, starting in march. Sohi was able to pivot by providing weekly virtual programming through zoom and other on-line platforms. Sohi created quality virtual programming with rotating health, wellness and social opportunities on a weekly basis, including yoga, zumba and bodyweight workouts and a dance every friday. The organization held 6 virtual fitness competitions with coaches providing weekly practices via zoom. However, some events were not able to be replicated virtually, like our young athlete playdays. Also, participation in virtual events was at a much lower level than in-person events, often due to technical and accessibility issues. Where possible, fundraising events were transitioned to virtual events, but events like cop-on-top and tip-a-cop were cancelled outright. Sohi's budget was greatly reduced for 2020.

Net assets with donor restrictions - perpetual - the organization reports, as net assets with perpetual donor restrictions, gifts and bequests which have been accepted with the donors stipulation that the principal be maintained intact in perpetuity with only the income to be utilized. At december 31, 2019, the organization has a 500,000 donor-restricted endowment from the harry and jeanette weinberg foundation established for neighbor island regional sports tournaments. As stipulated by the donor, the organization must maintain the contributed cash in a separate bank account controlled by the harry and jeanette weinberg foundation. In march 2020, the weinberg foundation released the organization from the restrictions and requirements in the original endowment agreement. This release is reflected on schedule d, part v, line 1b contributions, (a) current year. In 2010, the state enacted a version of the uniform prudent management of institutional funds act (upmifa), which provides guidance and authority to charitable organizations concerning the management and investment of funds held by those organizations, and imposes additional duties on those who manage and invest charitable funds. The organization has determined that upmifa had no impact on the organization's accounting or financial reporting of its permanent endowment. The board of directors has interpreted the state's enacted version of upmifa as requiring the preservation of the historical dollar value of donor-restricted endowment funds absent explicit donor stipulations to the contrary. As a result of this interpretation, the organization classifies as net assets with perpetual donor restrictions (a) the original value of a gift to the endowment, (b) the original value of subsequent gifts to the endowment, and (c) accumulations to the endowment made in accordance with the direction of the applicable donor gift instrument at the time the accumulation is added to the fund. The remaining portion of the donor- restricted endowment fund that is not classified in net assets with perpetual donor restrictions is classified as net assets with donor restrictions for purpose or time until those amounts are appropriated for expenditure. The organization considers the following factors in making a determination to appropriate or accumulate donor-restricted endowment funds: (1) the duration and preservation of the fund, (2) the purposes of the organization and the donor-restricted endowment fund, (3) general economic conditions, (4) the possible effect of inflation and deflation, (5) the expected total return from income and the appreciation of investments, (6) other resources of the organization, and (7) the investment policies of the organization. The organization has a policy of appropriating for expenditure each year all investment income generated from endowments, which amounted to approximately 9,000 and 11,000 in 2020 and 2019, respectively, and which are presented as revenues without donor restrictions on the statements of activities. There are no board designated endowments at december 31, 2020 or 2019.
