Form 990 Part III Line 4A

The HSCC is a no-kill animal shelter housing approximately 110 animals a day. While under our care these animals receive daily necessities, medical care and socialization in preparation for their adoption. For those less adoptable animals the HSCC becomes their sanctuary. All animals are spayed/neutered while under the care of the HSCC (if not prior to intake) and fully vetted. These pets are typically owner surrenders or animals rescued from the county shelter. Owner surrenders come to us for various reasons such as owner illness or homelessness, animal illness/medical condition, lifestyle no longer caters to a pet or they are simply not wanted anymore. The need for a safe haven is often far greater than our space and/or resources permit. Often, we help pets stay within their home by providing pet food and supplies, counseling and additional resources. Our Home-to-Home program assists owners who want to keep their pets out of a shelter by matching them with those wishing to adopt. We provide food to "Meals on Wheels" participants and many other individuals and families within Cobb County who are financially struggling and finding it difficult to feed their pets. By offering this service the HSCC allows these animals to stay in loving homes and reduces the number being surrendered to shelters and those that may be euthanized. We also provided citizens with cages, dog houses, carriers, traps, etc. to assist with housing or transporting animals. To help reduce the issue of pet overpopulation the HSCC dispensed over 5,500 low cost spay/neuter certificates to the general public. These certificates are honored at ten participating veterinary clinics within Cobb County. This program encourages and allows pet owners the opportunity to spay/neuter their pets for a more affordable cost which will protect their health and reduce their desire to roam. We educate citizens on the importance of spay/neuter through outreach at community events, educational programs and counseling. Without this proactive measure the number of unwanted pets will continue to grow which will ultimately lead to more animals being abandoned, feral cat colonies expanding and the number of dogs roaming at large increasing. In turn the local county shelter will encounter more owner surrenders and stray retrievals along with a higher number of euthanasia as the facility reaches maximum capacity. The HSCC provides educational programs to youths within the community such as schools groups, scout troops, etc. Our programs help nurture a sense of responsibility and compassion and teaches skills to gently handle and safely interact with animals. Research shows that childhood cruelty to animals can be a warning sign of violence and criminal behavior in later life. Our goal is to help educate and prepare children for their future to be responsible pet owners and provide humane treatment to animals of all kinds. To promote HSCC adoptable animals and valuable information regarding humane pet guardianship, we appeared on Fox 5 TV's "Good Day Atlanta" with a "Pet of the Day" fifty-three Monday mornings during 2018. With a daily viewing audience for this segment being over 250,000 households, we are able to give our animals a great deal of exposure, and share who we are and what we do, along with educational information regarding pet ownership. Starting July 5, 2018, the HSCC partnered with Java Cats Cafe in Marietta. This location serves as a foster agency for up to twenty-five HSCC felines at any given time. This partnership has provided additional exposure for adoptable cats and has doubled our feline adoption rate. The HSCC supplies Java Cats with cat food and continues to provide medical care, as needed, to the felines housed there. To reduce the risk of illness being transmitted to the animals (as they are in such a public environment), the HSCC provides medical shoe covers and antibacterial hand sanitizer to each and every customer entering the cat lounge. The HSCC maintai

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

Endowment funds consist of donor-restricted endowments and funds designated by the board as endowment (quasi-endowments). Income from donor-restricted endowments is restricted for specified purposes, with the exception of the amounts available for general use. Donor-restricted endowment funds are not available for general expenditures. Board-designated endowment of $9,108 and $11,200 at December 31, 2022 and 2021, respectively, is subject to an annual spending rate. Although the Organization does not intend to spend from this board-designated endowment, these amounts could be made available if necessary. The endowment consists of funds established as a Legacy Endowment fund for the purpose to either acquire or renovate a capital asset, meet urgent unexpected financial needs that are unlikely to recur, or for opportunities to significantly improve or expand activities that further the mission of the Organization. The Foundation has a spending policy whereby disbursements will be made annually as long as the fund balance exceeds $10,000. Any unexpended funds from those available for distribution in a given year will be accrued and will continue to be considered available for distribution in subsequent years.

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization has been recognized as exempt from federal and state income taxes under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and similar state statutes. Management evaluated the Organization's tax positions and concluded that the Organization had taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes.

Part XI, Line 2D - Other Adjustments:

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Endowment funds consist of donor-restricted endowments and funds designated by the board as endowment (quasi-endowments).
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The Organization has been recognized as exempt from federal and state income taxes under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and similar state statutes. Management evaluated the Organization's tax positions and concluded that the Organization had taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The HSCC is a no-kill animal shelter housing approximately 110 animals a day.
