IRS990/Desc0THE WRITERS GUILD FOUNDATION SHAVELSON-WEBB LIBRARY & ARCHIVEThe Writers Guild Foundation Shavelson-Webb Library (Library) is the Foundations largest and most visible program, containing more than 30,000 catalogued items. With its focus on collecting award-nominated scripts, the Library serves as a valuable resource to the community and advances the recognition of writers unique contribution to the art of film and television. The Writers Guild Foundation Archive (Archive) contains unique and rare items, from the personal papers of prominent writers to early WGA periodicals, photographs, vintage scripts, rare books, and other ephemera including typewriters, awards, scrapbooks, and strike realia. The Library catalogued 1,513 new scripts, books and audiovisual materials. The most popular TV titles were Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, and Transparent. The most requested feature titles were Captain America, Chinatown, Sunset Boulevard, and Thor.On October 1, 2014, the Library expanded hours to include every Saturday as well as an extra hour in the evening on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Library is serving more patrons than ever. In 2014-15, the Library welcomed over 7500 in-house patrons, 800 first-time visitors, 6500 outside patrons at exhibits, and 100,000 online visitors. To aid collection development and monitor metrics for collection and service assessments, the Library implemented a new system in Google Forms to track usage such as titles read, material requests, and attendance. The Archive continues to be a resource to scholars, researchers, WGA members and the public. The Archive received 295 research requests in 2014-15. Researchers included scholars from the Oxford English Dictionary, Emerson College, University of California Santa Cruz, University of California Berkeley, University of Texas at Austin, and Yale. Several materials were featured in the WGA's magazine, Written By.Archival collections processed included the Alfred Brenner Collection, T.S. Cook Collection, Norman Corwin Collection, Jane Espenson Collection, David Fury Collection, Sheldon Keller Collection, Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux Collection, Mary H. OConnor Collection, Del Reisman Collection, Howard Rodman Collection, Mel Tolkin Collection, Linda Woolverton Collection, and seven boxes of Screen Writers Guild Records, 1920-1954.In-house Library and lobby exhibits spotlighted unique materials from Friends, handwritten drafts of screenplays, Screen Writers Guild Awards records, Screen Pioneers (women writers 1910-1950), Storytellers at War, and Mad Men. Digital outreach included online tributes to writers Stewart Stern and Ann Marcus, and a blog post on the Howard Rodman collection. Library team members curated and hosted traveling pop-up exhibits at the Austin Film Festival and at Foundation educational events. Press coverage included The Austin Chronicle, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, Variety, Vulture, and The Wrap.Oral History co-productions this year included Ken Levine & David Issacs and Elias Davis & David Pollock with the Emmys and David Webb Peoples & Janet Peoples with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. The guild coalition for the Academys digital archive of film craft interviews, including the Art Directors Guild, SAG-AFTRA, Cinematographers Guild, Editors Guild, and the Film Composers Guild, met several times for strategic planning supported by NEA and NEH grants. The Library hosted Write-a-Thons on March 7, April 11 and May 16. The Library stayed open until 11 pm to provide a space for writers working on contest deadlines. The Library held two tours and master classes for the Ghetto Film School.A major highlight of the past year was the January 2015 publication of The Writers, a history of the WGA by Miranda Banks. The book features rare Archive materials and research conducted using previously inaccessible WGA records.
