Mission

Camphill foundation (the "foundation") was formed to grow, strengthen, and safeguard the camphill movement in north america through strategic grants and programmatic initiatives that ensure long-term sustainability and flourishing of camphill communities. Camphill is a worldwide movement of vibrant life sharing communities where people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities strive together to reach full potentials. A majority of the foundation's programmatic revenue is derived from contributions.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 1A

The executive committee shall have the following responsibilities and powers: from the by-laws: "the executive committee shall be comprised of the chairman, vice chair, treasurer, secretary, and the executive director of the board, as well as other members of the board that the executive committee deem necessary to carry on the functions of the committee. The committee will serve on behalf of the board at the board's discretion. The board has designated the executive committee to act on its behalf on an emergency basis including the emergency distribution of foundation funds. Further, the executive committee has the power to make decisions on behalf of the foundation in the periods between board meetings, subject to subsequent approval by the full board and including the emergency distribution of foundation funds, except (i) filling vacancies on the board or nominating committee; (ii) amendment or repeal of the by-laws or the adoption on new bylaws (iii) amendment or repeal of any resolution of the board which by its terms shall not be so amendable or repealable; (iv) employment or termination of the employment of the executive director; (v) final approval of the annual budget; and (vi) approval of any substantive distribution or disposal of foundation assets. The board will be notified of any such decisions made, in a written report, within 15 days." in addition, the executive committee - works closely with the executive director in formulating and overseeing the implementation of the strategic goals and policies of the foundation and, when appropriate, makes recommendations regarding approval of strategic and policy goals to the full board. - works in an advisory role with the executive director. - responsible to review the agenda for board meetings and bringing recommendations to the board regarding decision items on the agenda. - reviews the performance and sets compensation of the executive director on an annual basis. Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The camphill endowment fund (arcana) was established to assist in maintaining and developing the ongoing life and purposes of the camphill centers and organizations in north america. The endowment fund was created to fund special operating, programmatic and financial aid/scholarship and general income shortfalls. The principal donation of $1,000,000 will not be expended in order to preserve capital. Only the investment earnings, exclusive of capital gains, may be spent to support the operations of the foundation. The mark feer fund was established to support the work and activities of camphill in north america. The income generated is to be used to support the holiday, recreational and special needs of persons residing in camphill places in north america, at the discretion of the board of directors of the foundation.

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation recognizes and measures its unrecognized tax benefits in accordance with financial accounting standards board ("fasb") accounting standards codification ("asc") 740, income taxes. Under that guidance, the foundation assesses the likelihood, based on their technical merit, that tax positions will be sustained upon examination based on the facts, circumstances and information available at the end of each period. The measurement of unrecognized tax benefits is adjusted when new information is available or when an event occurs that requires a change. Management has evaluated the foundation's tax positions and has concluded that the foundation has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the accompanying financial statements.
