Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Milagro house offers education, housing and support services for women and their children who without our program would likely be experiencing homelessness. We are the only program of its kind in the lancaster area that has education as its foundation. We firmly believe that education is a critical component to breaking the barriers that prevent the women we serve from obtaining a job that pays a family-sustaining wage and allows them to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children.

Additional Explanations

Part III, Line 1, Continued

Who we serve: milagro house is a committed to helping women obtain an education and thus, we are not an emergency shelter. Women accepted into the program have completed an application process, testing and interviews. The average length of stay for our moms is 6-9 months; it is not unusual for women to live at milagro house for a year. Women come to us from a variety of backgrounds and locations. Some come from domestic violence situations, some from families not equipped to offer housing and support to new mothers and their babies, others from shelters and temporary housing programs. Residential: milagro house has the capacity to house up to 9 women and their children at our building on west chestnut street. The number of children residing at milagro house fluctuates, but we average 12-15 at any given time. Non-residential: as space permits, milagro house accepts women on a non-residential basis in our education center. Often, these students are on our waiting list for the residential program and are able to begin their education while waiting for a space to open in the house. We serve an average of 3-5 non-residential students at any given time. Beyond milagro house: women who have completed our program and have moved to their first apartment are part of beyond milagro house. This program provides support and access to our staff and programming to provide vital support for that first transitional year to independence. Programming: educational programming: milagro house offers two educational options for women; high school equivalency classes offered through our on-site education center and/or by pursuing a post-secondary credential through our college degree/post-secondary credential at a variety of local colleges, universities or trade schools. Milagro house is also an accredited hiset testing center (for a high school equivalency credential) through the educational testing service (ets). Life-skills programming: educational initiatives are supplemented by comprehensive life-skills programming designed to develop knowledge/skills associated with daily living. Subject areas include budgeting and basic financial skills, parenting, nutrition, healthy relationships, and self-care. Life-skills workshops are a required component of the overall program. Intensive case management: a customized, case management plan developed for each woman supports personal goals that dovetail with her educational goals. Women identify areas for growth and connect with community resources that support their individualized journeys. Workforce development: women participate in career workshops, internships, career mentoring, and industry tours. A customized career plan is developed to support individualized education plans. The program is a win-win scenario for women seeking employment at a sustaining wage, and employers looking for qualified employees. Children's programming: children age birth-12 live with their mothers at milagro house. Program focus is on promoting parent/child interaction, healthy development, and access to child-centered materials that foster healthy play, literacy, kindergarten readiness, and elementary-age academic achievement. Beyond milagro house: after program completion, women have support for a full year to ensure sustainability and to address any problems before they become insurmountable. The program also gives us a basis to measure outcomes, critical to quantifying our impact. Community need and impact: in lancaster county, pennsylvania and nationally more than 1 in 3 families headed by single mothers live in poverty. Barriers to full-time work (or work that pays a family-sustaining wage) include lack of access to educational opportunities, skill development, affordable childcare, and transportation, all of which disproportionally keep women and their children in a destructive cycle of generational poverty. Milagro house pairs educational programming with intensive case management, workforce development and life-skill
