“MISSION: CultureWorks is a Seattle based 501(c)3 whose mission is to produce radio, television, and multi-media programming that uses culture as a window to explore issues in American History, society, race relations, creativity, sprituality and the nature of transformation & human possibility. The works are intended for broadcast and for classroom teaching. In addition, CultureWorks develops pedagogical methods based on documentary work.ACCOMPLISHEMNTS: CultureWorks had a very busy year in 2024. We continued our work with our educational project time Out of Joint which brings people who became educated in prison into classrooms via Zoom to teach workshops about writing, education, Shakespeare and self-expression. We also continued our work on a large scale oral history project which will be deposited into the Library of Congress American Folklife Center. This project will deliver over 60 hours of interviews about the lives and educational paths of people who spent many years in prisons. It also will deliver video documentation of performances of their art work and writing.We produced over 35 workshops in high schools and colleges and law schools around the country. We produced a series of 15 complex lesson plans that combine Shakespeare, primary sources from LOC.gov and our teams original writings. We produced 4 public events with the Queens Public Library in NYC. Two of these events were filmed by professional videographers, and edited by our ED, Steve Rowland and are available online for teaching. They are each 90 minutes long and present formerly incarcerated writers performing and speaking. And each has a model oral history inverview about 15-20 minutes.We also continued work on our upcoming film Monthly Review @ 75. Rowland interviewed over 25 important scholars, economists and historians with a professional film crew.”
