Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The foundation owns collections of works of art and similar assets that it has acquired over the years. Such collections are protected, cared for, and held in the foundation's museums and facilities for public exhibition, education, and research. The value of the foundation's collections are not capitalized and have been excluded from the statements of financial position. Contributed collection items are not recognized as contribution revenue. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired and proceeds from deaccessions are reflected as increases in net assets with donor restrictions. In 2024, collection items purchased totaled $362,915, and deaccession income totaled $190,609.

PART III, LINE 4:

The comprehensive collections include rare and extinct natural science specimens of insects, birds, mammals, rocks and minerals, plus superb holdings in american (north and south), non-western and european art. Our art collection includes pre-columbian, north american indian, colonial, pa-german and 19th and 20th century fine arts, european (including medieval, renaissance, arms and armor and 19th century), and middle eastern (including islamic and judaic). Our ancient civilizations collections range from mesopotamia, egypt, etruscan, greece to rome. These collections are enjoyed by thousands of visitors annually and are used to provide an educational basis for school children, teachers, families, seniors and researchers.

PART V, LINE 4:

To support the daily operating expenses of the foundation for the reading public museum.

PART X, LINE 2:

In accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, the organization accounts for uncertain tax positions relative to unrelated business income, if any, as required.

THROUGH THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF DONORS, THE FTI PROGRAM ALLOWS GROUPS TO VISIT THE MUSEUM AND PLANETARIUM BY COVERING EXPENSES SUCH AS ADMISSION AND BUSSING COSTS. THIS FUNDING PROGRAM IS INTEGRAL TO KEEPING OUR EDUCATION AND COLLECTION ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND BRINGING STUDENTS INTO THE MUSEUM WHO OTHERWISE WOULD NOT HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY. SEE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON SCHEDULE O.APPROXIMATELY 30% OF TOURS ANNUALLY ARE PARTIALLY OR COMPLETELY UNDERWRITTEN BY THE MUSEUM'S FEED THEIR IMAGINATION FUND. THE MUSEUM AND NEAG PLANETARIUM RECEIVE BETWEEN 60,000 AND 100,000 VISITORS PER YEAR. WHILE NO OFFICIAL COUNT IS KEPT, ANNUAL VISITS TO THE MUSEUM ARBORETUM AND SCULPTURE GARDEN EASILY EXCEED 120,000 PER YEAR, AND LIKELY TOTAL MULTIPLES OF THAT NUMBER. THE ARBORETUM, A VALUABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE, IS MAINTAINED AND MANAGED BY NEARLY 150 ARBORETUM ASSISTANTS THROUGH THE MASTER GARDNERS PROGRAM OF THE AMERICAN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY THROUGH PENN STATE UNIVERSITY AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC.TEMPORARY/SPECIAL EXHIBITS AND PERMANENT COLLECTION - THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THE MUSEUM PROVIDES PATRONS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE TWO KINDS OF EXHIBITS. PATRONS CAN ALSO ENJOY TEMPORARY/SPECIAL EXHIBITS FROM EXTERNAL INSTITUTIONS SPANNING MANY TOPICS AND TARGET AUDIENCES. RPM PRESENTS ROUGHLY 12 TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS EACH YEAR, INCLUDING ONES DRAWN FROM BOTH EXTERNAL SOURCES AND THOSE CURATED FROM OUR PERMANENT COLLECTION. ADDITIONALLY, WORKS OF ART ARE ACQUIRED EACH YEAR BY GIFT AND PURCHASE FOR THE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION. AN EVER-INCREASING NUMBER OF OBJECTS FROM THE COLLECTION ARE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC VIA EMUSEUM AND THE GOOGLE ART PROJECT, WITH SEVERAL HUNDRED MORE ADDED ANNUALLY. TRAVELING EXHIBITS - THE MUSEUM MAKES AVAILABLE INTERNALLY CURATED EXHIBITIONS TO OTHER MUSEUMS AROUND THE WORLD.
