Mission

The metropolitan philadelphia chapter of the american college of surgeons, inc. Is incorporated in the commonwealth of pennsylvania under the nonprofit corporation laws of 1988. The purpose of the chapter is to advance the science, study, and practice of surgery, to establish a standard of competency and character for practitioners of surgery, and to educate the public regarding the practice of surgery.

ANNUAL JOINT SCIENTIFIC MEETING. THE METROPOLITAN PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER ACS AND THE PHILADELPHIA ACADEMY OF SURGERY HOSTED A JOINT DINNER MEETING ON MAY 20 AT THE SHERATON SOCIETY HILL IN PHILADELPHIA. THE EVENT, ATTENDED BY 132 MEMBER AND NON-MEMBER PHYSICIANS, OFFERED CME CREDITS FOR THE PRESENTATION GIVEN BY BARBARA BASS, MD, FACS WHO LECTURED ON RETOOLING IN SURGERY: BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A LIFETIME OF HIGH PERFORMANCE SURGERY. THIRTY RESIDENTS COMPETED IN THE ABSTRACT POSTER COMPETITION AND SEVEN VENDORS SERVING THE SURGICAL COMMUNITY WERE ON HAND TO DISPLAY AND DISCUSS THEIR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. THE ANNUAL COMMITTEE ON APPLICANTS INTERVIEWED 25 INDIVIDUALS FOR FELLOWSHIP IN THE COLLEGE.--
YOUNG SURGEON/RESIDENT COMMITTEE HELD THE FOURTH ANNUAL SURGICAL JEOPARDY TOURNAMENT AT THE NATIONAL MECHANICS IN CENTER CITY PHILADELPHIA ON NOVEMBER 7, 2019. FORTY-FOUR RESIDENTS AND MPACS MEMBERS WERE ON HAND AS EIGHT TEAMS FROM THE PHILADELPHIA-AREA INSTITUTIONS ANSWERED SURGICAL QUESTIONS IN A JEOPARDY FORMAT. THE NETWORKING EVENTS ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR RESIDENTS AND YOUNG SURGEONS TO NETWORK AND DISCUSS ISSUES AFFECTING THEM. THEY ALSO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET KEY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW THE MPACS CAN ASSIST THEM IN THEIR CAREER PATH. THE WINNING JEOPARDY TEAM HOLDS THE COVETED TROPHY AT THEIR INSTITUTION UNTIL THE NEXT YEARS EVENT. ALLERGAN WAS THE EVENT SPONSOR THIS YEAR.--

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

Annual joint scientific meeting. The metropolitan philadelphia chapter acs and the philadelphia academy of surgery hosted a joint dinner meeting on may 20 at the sheraton society hill in philadelphia. The event, attended by 132 member and non-member physicians, offered cme credits for the presentation given by barbara bass, md, facs who lectured on retooling in surgery: building infrastructure for a lifetime of high performance surgery. Thirty residents competed in the abstract poster competition and seven vendors serving the surgical community were on hand to display and discuss their products and services. The annual committee on applicants interviewed 25 individuals for fellowship in the college.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Young surgeon/resident committee held the fourth annual surgical jeopardy tournament at the national mechanics in center city philadelphia on november 7, 2019. Forty-four residents and mpacs members were on hand as eight teams from the philadelphia-area institutions answered surgical questions in a jeopardy format. The networking events are an opportunity for residents and young surgeons to network and discuss issues affecting them. They also have an opportunity to meet key council members and learn more about how the mpacs can assist them in their career path. The winning jeopardy team holds the coveted trophy at their institution until the next years event. Allergan was the event sponsor this year.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

Mock oral boards. In the fall each year, mpacs hosts mock oral boards as a way for residents to prepare for their examinations. Each institution sending residents to the event also provides examiners. There is a nominal charge for participation. Residents work through a series of oral examinations throughout the day on various surgical topics. The event is held at lankenau medical center in wynnewood, pa. The september 21st event had 42 resident participants and 42 examiners.
