Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of st. Christopher's foundation for children (scfc) is to support the health and well-being of children in the community served by st. Christopher's hospital for children through programs in the areas of care, outreach, research and education.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The community oral health initiative program facilitates free care and services to low-income children, including those who are uninsured, providing comprehensive oral healthcare and education. The program reaches more than 2,000 children annually. The program collaborates with 54 schools (public, parochial and charter), community-based organizations (including shelters and foster care centers), and st. Christopher's hospital for children. The ronald mcdonald care mobile, a major program component, is equipped with dental operatories, an instrument processing center and office space. It visits patients at head start facilities, early childhood centers, elementary schools and summer camps. New and continuing care patients get a thorough exam and dentists take immediate action fillings, crowns, sealants, fluoride treatments to arrest disease and decay.program dentists and hygienists visit the sites and patients annually, providing comprehensive care on an ongoing basis. Children, families and community members are invited to educational presentations at community meetings, health fairs and other local events. Elementary, middle and high school students receive age-appropriate learning opportunities at schools in targeted areas.
Activity 3
The health tech program is a mentorship program which engages students from olney high school and kensington high school to achieve academic success, graduate from high school, and prepare for employment and post-secondary education. Students are paired with staff members in various departments who serve as mentors. Program participants have a 98% high school graduation rate, as compared to the 58.7% average in philadelphia. Reach out and read is a national early childhood literacy program enabling physicians at st. Christopher's hospital for children to prescribe books to patients (beginning at 6 months of age) during well visits and encourage families to read together through the national reach out and read program. Program outcomes include significant developmental gains in language and scoring higher on vocabulary tests and school readiness assessments and critical for success in school. The child life department at st. Christopher's hospital for children provides hundreds of children with access to specialized care and therapeutic interventions. While the department serves children throughout the hospital, the child life fellow (position funded in part by scfc) focuses on three areas of patient care: the treatment of burn patients (distractive therapies and dressing changes), support for their families, and education/prevention.
