The eastern pennsylvania chapter of the american college of surgeons was incorporated in april 1993, under the pennsylvania nonprofit corporation law of 1988. Effective january 1, 2003, the chapter merged with the central pennsylvania chapter of the american college of surgeons, inc. And changed its name to the keystone chapter, american college of surgeons, inc. The purpose of the chapter is to elevate the standards of surgery and to educate the profession and the public regarding the special training involved in the practice of surgery. In addition, the chapter unites members in their efforts to improve the quality of surgical patient care and provides a medium through which surgical experiences may be presented.

Mission

The Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Surgeons was incorporated in April 1993, under the Pennsylvania nonprofit Corporation Law of 1988. Effective January 1, 2003, the Chapter merged with the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Inc. and changed its name to the Keystone Chapter, American College of Surgeons, Inc. The purpose of the Chapter is to elevate the standards of surgery and to educate the profession and the public regarding the special training involved in the practice of surgery. In addition, the Chapter unites members in their efforts to improve the quality of surgical patient care and provides a medium through which surgical experiences may be presented.

THE KEYSTONE CHAPTER, WHICH REPRESENTS 42 COUNTIES IN EASTERN AND CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA, OFFERS EXCLUSIVE MEMBER BENEFITS, DEVELOPS EXCELLENT CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS, PROVIDES MORE FREQUENT AND USEFUL COMMUNICATIONS ON ISSUES OF CONCERN AND INTEREST TO THE SURGICAL PROFESSION, AND OVERALL, SERVES AS AN EFFECTIVE VOICE FOR SURGEONS.--
THE 2024 SPRING CONFERENCE WAS HELD AT WELLSPAN PARK IN YORK, PA WITH 125 SURGICAL FELLOWS, PHYSICIANS, RESIDENTS, AND MEDICAL STUDENTS, AS WELL AS INDUSTRY PARTNERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) CREDIT HOURS WERE PROVIDED TO ATTENDEES. THIRTY ABSTRACT PAPERS AND CASE REPORTS WERE SUBMITTED WITH 29 BEING PRESENTED ELECTRONICALLY AND THE TOP SCORING ABSTRACT BEING PRESENTED AS PART OF THE EVENTS' AGENDA. SEVEN INDUSTRY PARTNERS PARTICIPATED IN THE EXHIBIT HALL TO SHARE UPDATES ON SURGICAL DEVICES, NEW MEDICATIONS, AND OTHER MATERIALS.--

The keystone chapter, which represents 42 counties in eastern and central pennsylvania, offers exclusive member benefits, develops excellent continuing education programs, provides more frequent and useful communications on issues of concern and interest to the surgical profession, and overall, serves as an effective voice for surgeons.

The 2024 spring conference was held at wellspan park in york, pa with 125 surgical fellows, physicians, residents, and medical students, as well as industry partners were in attendance. Continuing medical education (cme) credit hours were provided to attendees. Thirty abstract papers and case reports were submitted with 29 being presented electronically and the top scoring abstract being presented as part of the events' agenda. Seven industry partners participated in the exhibit hall to share updates on surgical devices, new medications, and other materials.

The keystone chapter, in collaboration with the metropolitan philadelphia chapter, hosted advocacy town hall meetings to keep members updated and hear concerns on relevent issues affecting their practice and patient care. As the local house of surgery, concerns are shared with the american college of surgeons, and in harrisburg and washington, dc.

The keystone chapter hosted its annual surgical jeopardy tournament as part of the spring conference to challenge residents on their knowledge and skills. Six teams, consisting of three resident members, competed in the tournament structured after the television show "jeopardy" to answer questions related to surgical techniques, diagnosis, and identification of top scholars in the surgical field. The winning team was recognized with the coveted surgical jeopardy trophy.
