“Line 4A: PROGRAM OPERATIONS RESEARCH: EXPENSES INCURRED IN THE OPERATIONS OF PA HUMANITIES INCLUDE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, SPECIAL EVENTS, PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND PUBLIC OUTREACH. Line 4B: PA HEART AND SOUL: PA Heart & Soul is a statewide community led planning initiative that helps small towns strengthen civic engagement and local decision-making through storytelling, exploration of community history, and the celebration of local recreational and cultural assets. PA Humanities provides funding, through partnerships with state and national funders, along with hands-on coaching as communities move through the four-phase process over approximately two years. The result is a unique and actionable plan grounded in what matters most to local residents. In 2025, we worked with six communities: Etna, the Venango Area, Port Allegany, Mansfield, Honesdale, and Johnsonburg-Ridgway. Line 4C: TEEN LIBRARY PROGRAMS: Youth-Led Humanities (YLH) is a statewide initiative that supports young people in developing social-emotional, leadership, and critical thinking skills through meaningful engagement with the humanities. Launched in 2023, YLH builds on more than a decade of success from PA Humanities' award-winning Teen Reading Lounge program, which demonstrated the power of youth-led discussion, creativity, and reflection. YLH expands these opportunities beyond book based activities to include a broad range of humanities experiences, while also investing in the adults who support youth-artists, teachers, librarians, and youth practitioners through coaching, skill-building, and shared learning. The program strengthens youth voice, fosters community connection, and ensures high quality, humanities-rich experiences across Pennsylvania. In 2025, PA Humanities supported 17 libraries and 5 out-of-school sites, providing funding and training for youth-serving professionals as well as leadership opportunities for participating youth. Line 4D: Other Program Services: Voices of History: Voices of History is a first-of-its-kind statewide initiative that documents and celebrates the stories, family histories, struggles, and triumphs of Black Pennsylvanians in the 20th and 21st centuries. Launched in 2024 with a special event featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson, the project began its community-based work in Pittsburgh. In 2025, the initiative expanded to Erie and Scranton, where resident story circles were held in partnership with local organizations. These gatherings produced dozens of new videos capturing and preserving the lived experiences of Black Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth. Rain Poetry: Rain Poetry is a statewide initiative that weaves together literacy development, the humanities, and creative placemaking to spark learning and celebrate community. In collaboration with Poet Laureates and teaching artists, young people explore the art of haiku-writing original poems inspired by curated themes. These poems are then installed in public spaces using a special water-activated solution that remains invisible until it meets rain or a splash of water, when the words appear as if by magic. The project has already brought poetry to life in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Johnstown and, in 2025, expanded to Reading and culminated in a special celebration at the State Library in Harrisburg. To support even wider participation, PA Humanities developed a Rain Poetry Toolkit and launched a special grant opportunity that empowers communities across the Commonwealth to create their own Rain Poetry installations. Special Projects: Wingspan: Wingspan is a grant initiative launched as part of PA Humanities' 50th anniversary, created to strengthen organizations engaged in community-based humanities work. PA Humanities awarded two-year grants of $50,000-$100,000 to 24 small and midsize groups, to support programming, general operations, marketing and communications, staff development, and capacity-building.
