The society has a management service agreement with the pa medical society (pamed), in which pamed provides administrative services to the society, which includes membership/administration coordination, board and committee support, marketing and communications, meeting coordination, technology management, and financial management.

The academy is a membership organization with members paying annual membership dues. Criteria for membership is as follows: 1) fellows must be board eligible or board certified dermatologists or dermatopathologists, having the degree of m.d. Or d.o., meeting the criteria of the american board of dermatology, the american board of osteopathic dermatology, or the american board of pathology. 2) fellows-in-training must be: a. Active full-time in a dermatology or dermatopathology residency or fellowship program accredited by the accreditation council for graduate medical education or the american osteopathic association. Or b. A medical student interested in pursuing a residency in dermatology. Applicants for membership are reviewed and approved upon submission by a membership committee.

The staff of the pa medical society initially review the form 990; then board officers review the return after it has been completed. The entire board is provided with a copy of the return before the return is filed with the internal revenue service.

A conflict of interest statement is completed annually by officers, directors, and key employees. The president and secretary of the board monitor the policy. Family and business relationships are expressly mentioned in the policy. Board members and other interested persons shall disclose all facts material to the conflict. Such person will not participate in or be present to hear discussions on the conflict except to disclose material facts and respond to questions. The person will not vote on any questions regarding a conflict.

The academy hosted skin cancer screening for fire fighters at the hershey fire company to raise awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers. Volunteer dermatologists and residents provided skin checks and educational material on skin cancer prevention to the fire fighters.

The organization is exempt from federal income taxes as an organization described under the internal revenue code section 501(c)(6) and applicable regulations, except for net income derived from unrelated business activities, if any. Asc no. 740, "income taxes," prescribes a comprehensive model for how an organization should measure, recognize, present, and disclose uncertain tax positions taken on its tax return. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for tax positions taken and, as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements.
