Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

All in person programs were ceased for most of the year due to covid-19.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Change in the value of split interest agreements and perpetual trusts 61,682. Purchase of collections and historical treasures -15,803.

Form 990 Part XII, Line 1

The organization's financial statements were prepared on the modified cash basis of accounting, which is a comprehensive basis of accounting other than accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america. The modified cash basis of accounting differs from accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america in that receivables and payables, inventories, certain assets and liabilities such as accrued income and expenses, and deferred expenses are not recognized in the financial statements.

Form 990 Part XII Line 2C

The organization has an executive committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. The committee provides oversight by voting for the selection of an independent accountant and by signing management engagement letters as well as assisting accountants with audits. This process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The historical landmarks of the organization have been capitalized and are recorded as components of land and improvements, building and improvements, and furniture and equipment. The majority of these values were determined by management in 1985. Prior to december 31, 1988, certain expenditures for fixed assets were not tracked in detail and were therefore not capitalized. The organization's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance. Except for real estate, assets of historical value are not recorded in the financial statements. Purchases of collections are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements.

PART III, LINE 4:

Collections consist primarily of books, objects, and manuscript items that explore the history of lancaster county and the presidency of james buchanan.

PART V, LINE 4:

Endowment funds are used to further the purposes and mission of the organization while honoring donor's intended use of funds.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization follows the standards for accounting for uncertainty in income taxes according to the principles of accounting standards codification (asc) 740, income taxes, which prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the organization, including whether the entity is exempt from income taxes. Management evaluated the tax positions taken and concluded that the organization had taken no uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. With few exceptions, the organization is no longer subject to income tax examinations by the u.s. Federal, state, or local tax authorities for years ending before 2017.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Purchases of collections/historical treasures -15,803. Change in value of split-interest agreement and perpetual trusts 61,682.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Rental expenses -1,835. Fundraising expenses -37,237. Bookstore expenses -10,761.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Bookstore expenses 10,761. Fundraising expenses 37,237. Rental expenses 1,835.

IRS990/MissionDesc0TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HERITAGE AND HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE, PLACES, AND EVENTS THAT SHAPED OUR REGION, THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA, AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. WE ACHIEVE THIS MISSION BY ACTIVELY COLLECTING, PRESERVING, INTERPRETING, AND MAKING ACCESSIBLE MATERIALS REPRESENTING LANCASTER COUNTY'S PAST AND BY PRESERVING AND SHARING THE HOME, LIFE AND LEGACY OF JAMES BUCHANAN, THE 15TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. WE PROMOTE THIS HERITAGE AND HISTORY THROUGH A RESEARCH LIBRARY, CHANGING EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC AND SCHOOL PROGRAMS, ARCHIVAL AND ARTIFACT COLLECTIONS, THE LOUISE ARNOLD TANGER ARBORETUM, AND WHEATLAND - A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND THE HOME OF BUCHANAN, PENNSYLVANIA'S ONLY U.S. PRESIDENT. AS A PORTAL OF HISTORY FOR THE COMMUNITY, LANCASTERHISTORY.ORG SERVES THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF HISTORY-ORIENTED ORGANIZATIONS, BRINGING GREATER FOCUS TO THE EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNERS OF ALL AGES TO EXPERIENCE AMERICA'S PAST IN LANCASTER COUNTY.
