“Pennsylvania academy of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1952, under the name of pennsylvania academy of ophthalmology and otolaryngology. On september 21, 1990, the academy spun off activities related to ophthalmology and adopted its current name. The academy's purpose is to serve the common professional interests of otolaryngologists and their patients in pennsylvania and to promote the highest professional and ethical standards of the practice of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.”

The academy hosts an annual scientific meeting with sessions that address current topics in otolaryngology. The 2017 meeting offered physicians who attended up to 7.25 continuing medical education credits. There were 139 attendees at the 2017 meeting. 2. The academy produces two newsletters a year that contain scientific articles submitted by members, reports from the pennsylvania medical society and american academy of otolaryngology head and neck surgery, and legislative updates. 3. The academy engages in dialogue with third-party payers on reimbursement issues impacting the practice of otolaryngology. A representative of the pao-hns serves on the regional medicare contractor advisory committee and offers comments on policies related to the specialty.”
