IRS990/Desc0TRAVELERS AID ESTABLISHED AN EMERGENCY SHELTER, TRAVELERS AID'S FAMILY RESIDENCE (TAFR), FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES AND SINGLE FEMALES AT THE KIRKBRIDE CENTER IN WEST PHILADELPHIA (LOCATED AT 49TH AND MARKET STREETS) IN FALL 2002. THE NUMBER OF FAMILIES APPLYING TO OSH FOR EMERGENCY SHELTER BEGAN TO SURGE UNEXPECTEDLY IN AUGUST 2002. OSH WAS REQUIRED TO HOUSE THESE FAMILIES IN MOTELS UNTIL SUPPLEMENTAL EMERGENCY SHELTER CAPACITY COULD BE DEVELOPED. TASP IDENTIFIED FULLY LICENSED SHELTER SPACE AT THE KIRKBRIDE CENTER IN SEPTEMBER 2002 AND QUICKLY ESTABLISHED A 70-BED EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES AND SINGLE FEMALES AT THE CENTER STARTING OCTOBER 4, 2002. THE TAFR EXPANDED IN OCTOBER 2002 AND AGAIN IN JANUARY 2003, SEPTEMBER 2003, AND AUGUST 2004 TO A CAPACITY OF 305 PERSONS TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASE IN HOMELESS FAMILIES AND TO TAKE IN SINGLE FEMALES AND COUPLES FROM OTHER SHELTERS. IN 2006, THE SHELTER ADDED A COMMON ROOM TO HOUSE UP TO FOUR ADDITIONAL FAMILIES. THE KIRKBRIDE CENTER HAS RAPIDLY BECOME A CRUCIAL COMPONENT OF THE CITY'S EMERGENCY SHELTER SYSTEM. THE TAFR MOVED TO A RENOVATED SECTION OF THE KIRKBRIDE CENTER DURING 2014, AND THE CURRENT CAPACITY IS 69 FAMILIES.
