Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sha serves its members through networking events and provision of technical assistance, information, and advocacy in order to assist them in developing and managing permanent affordable housing with supportive services for people with mental illness, addictions, intellectual and developmental disabilities, the homeless and other special needs. Sha runs meetings with its full membership (100 attendees every other month), with housing developer members (30 attendees), with families and consumer representatives (30 attendees) and also hosts an annual statewide conference on the first friday in december for the entire industry (over 450 attendees). The organization strives to inform its membership about policy and rules and regulations effecting the industry as well as innovative and creative approaches to supportive housing.

The supportive housing association of nj (sha) is a statewide non-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote and maintain a strong supportive housing industry in nj where poeple with special needs live as independently as possible in affordable homes with flexible delivery of supportive services.

Technical assistance and advocacy for other non profit organizations in helping to develop or manage permanent, affordable, and supportive housing for persons with disabilities. Technical assistance and advocacy accomplishments: hosting of membership meetings in trenton featuring speakers from government organizations and other related institutions. Also featuring other topics of interest for the membership such as employment for people with disabilties, financing options for the industry, regional plan updates and more. Sha meets 6 times annually with its housing developer members to discuss issues of mutual concern and to work together to solve problems associated with housing development for low income people with disabilities. Sha meets 6 times annually with representatives of family and consumer groups to discuss housing issues and to identify topics for advocacy and innovation. Advocacy initiatives: supporting system partners in efforts to access municipal housing trust funds and ensure that the courts approve municipal housing plans. Creation of an investors council to expand special needs housing with private investment. Encouraging new ideas in housing for more efficiency and expansion to those in need. Research and writing of a housing guide for families and consumers. (a guide to supportive housing; a road map for consumers and their families) meet with representatives of state government (both executive and legislative bodies) to modify rules and regulations governing supportive housing that will strengthen provider roles and expand housing and services for those in need. Sending of weekly email blasts to approximately 3,000 email addresses on topics ranging from supportive housing policy, articles of interest and developments in affordable housing for people with disabilities. Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes, under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The organization follows accounting standards that provide clarification on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in the organization's financial statements. The guidance prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, and also provides guidance on de-recognition, classifacation, interest and penalties, disclosure and transition. The organization's policy is to recognize interest and penalties on unrecognized tax benefits on the income tax expenses in the statement of activities and changes in net assets. No interest and penalties were recorded during 2023. At december 31, 2023, there are no significant income tax uncertainties that are expected to have a material impact on the organization's financial statements.

THE GUIDANCE PRESCRIBES A RECOGNITION THRESHOLD AND MEASUREMENT ATTRIBUTE FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT RECOGNITION AND MEASUREMENT OF A TAX POSITION TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN IN A TAX RETURN, AND ALSO PROVIDES GUIDANCE ON DE-RECOGNITION, CLASSIFACATION, INTEREST AND PENALTIES, DISCLOSURE AND TRANSITION. THE ORGANIZATION'S POLICY IS TO RECOGNIZE INTEREST AND PENALTIES ON UNRECOGNIZED TAX BENEFITS ON THE INCOME TAX EXPENSES IN THE STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES AND CHANGES IN NET ASSETS. NO INTEREST AND PENALTIES WERE RECORDED DURING 2023. AT DECEMBER 31, 2023, THERE ARE NO SIGNIFICANT INCOME TAX UNCERTAINTIES THAT ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE A MATERIAL IMPACT ON THE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.

SHA MEETS 6 TIMES ANNUALLY WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF FAMILY AND CONSUMER GROUPS TO DISCUSS HOUSING ISSUES AND TO IDENTIFY TOPICS FOR ADVOCACY AND INNOVATION. ADVOCACY INITIATIVES: SUPPORTING SYSTEM PARTNERS IN EFFORTS TO ACCESS MUNICIPAL HOUSING TRUST FUNDS AND ENSURE THAT THE COURTS APPROVE MUNICIPAL HOUSING PLANS. CREATION OF AN INVESTORS COUNCIL TO EXPAND SPECIAL NEEDS HOUSING WITH PRIVATE INVESTMENT. ENCOURAGING NEW IDEAS IN HOUSING FOR MORE EFFICIENCY AND EXPANSION TO THOSE IN NEED. RESEARCH AND WRITING OF A HOUSING GUIDE FOR FAMILIES AND CONSUMERS. (A GUIDE TO SUPPORTIVE HOUSING; A ROAD MAP FOR CONSUMERS AND THEIR FAMILIES) MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF STATE GOVERNMENT (BOTH EXECUTIVE AND LEGISLATIVE BODIES) TO MODIFY RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING SUPPORTIVE HOUSING THAT WILL STRENGTHEN PROVIDER ROLES AND EXPAND HOUSING AND SERVICES FOR THOSE IN NEED.
