Additional Explanations

Form 990 Part I Line 1

The Center focuses much of its programming in specific geographic areas to create the conditions that attract and retain young people and entrepreneurs. Our programs strengthen communities, enhance destination appeal for visitors and residents, drive regional innovation in key sectors of the forest-based economy, including wood products, outdoor recreation, and Automated Wood Heat, and provide regional leadership. Our integrated approach is rooted in a strong land ethic that benefits both people and place. Since 2005, the Center's programs have: 1. Benefited more than 7,800 jobs in the forest economy; 2. Conserved 258,000 acres of managed forestland for community benefit; 3. Secured and leveraged $241 million for projects that benefit the region's communities, the economy and forest stewardship.

Form 990. Page 12 Part XII Line 2C:

No changes from prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The Center is exempt from Federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Center must, however, pay income taxes on the net profit from its unrelated business activities, if any. The Center recognizes the tax benefit of an uncertain tax position only if management determines that it is more likely than not that the tax position would be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merit of the position. Management has determined that through April 30, 2022 the Center did not take any material tax positions which do not meet the criteria for recognition.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Catalyzing innovation in the forest economy: The Center helps create and improve jobs and build local wealth through opportunities that advance a regional land ethic and sustainable use of the forest. The Center's program work focuses in the following three areas:-Wood Heat: The Automated Wood Heat program has, since inception, reduced greenhouse gas impact by 9,400 tons by substituting wood pellets for more than 1.5 million gallons of fossil fuels, generating $8.1 million in positive economic impact for the region.-Wood Products Manufacturing: This program has invested in regional marketing to expand wood heat; engineering for a wood-fired district heating system in Burlington, VT; certified logger programs in NY, VT and NH; new product development in Orono, Ashland, Bingham, and East Millinocket, ME; and a feasibility assessment of using domestic hardwoods in military vehicles, leveraging an additional $2.4-million investment in the region's wood products economy. -Business Assistance: The Northern Forest Board Forum provided CEOs from wood product companies in ME and VT with business coaching throughout the year.-Rural Destination Development: The Center guided communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Coos County of NH, and Oxford County of ME, to manage their assets for sustainable tourism and quality of life for residents through the Rural Tourism Academy.
