Mission

A 24-acre enlargement of the arnold arboretum, a boston city park, was publicly announced on march 13, 1996 by the former mayor thomas m. Menino, the first enlargement of this park in 101 years. The organization is involved in protecting and enhancing public enjoyment in the arboretum lands.

THE ORGANIZATION (APC) HOSTED ONE FALL CLEAN UP ON OCTOBER 5TH WITH VOLUNTEERS FROM THE APC, MIT AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE APC HAS CONTINUED TO ADVOCATE FOR EXPANDING THE PATH SYSTEM IN THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM AND INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WELCOMING ENTRANCES FOR THE UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS ADJACENT TO THE ARBORETUM. THE EXPANDED PATH SYSTEM WILL COMPLY WITH THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. IT WILL BE 10 FEET WIDE AND WILL ACCOMMODATE BOTH WALKERS AND BIKERS. AN EARLY ACTION PROJECT IN FY 2020 INCLUDED THE REMOVAL BY THE MBTA OF A CORRUGATED METAL SHED THAT BLOCKED THE VIEW TO THE HISTORIC STONE ABUTMENT NEXT TO THE ENTRANCE ARCHWAY AT THE END OF ARBORETUM ROAD. THE HORSLEY WITTEN GROUP IS REVISING THE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS FOR THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS UNIFIED PATH SYSTEM TO INCORPORATE THE ADDITIONAL SQUARE FOOTAGE THAT BECAME AVAILABLE AFTER THE REMOVAL OF THIS SHED. THE APC HAS REVIEWED THE DESIGN AND PERMITTING WORK NECESSARY TO CONSTRUCT THIS UNIFIED PATH SYSTEM. THE APC HAS COORDINATED WITH THE ARBORETUM, THE BOSTON PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT, THE BOSTON TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT (BTD), THE BOSTON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, BOSTON WATER AND SEWER, THE MBTA, WALKUP ROSLINDALE, ROZZIE BIKES, A STATE REPRESENTATIVE, A STATE SENATOR AND THE LIVABLE STREET ALLIANCE/EMERALD NETWORK. BOSTON WATER AND SEWER (BWS) HAS IMPROVED THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM ALONG SOUTH STREET TO CATCH THE RUNOFF RUSHING DOWN FROM HEMLOCK HILL ACROSS SOUTH STREET TO THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW. BWS HAS REGRADED AND SEEDED THE ERODED LAWN AREA IN THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW, PART OF WHICH WILL BECOME PART OF THE PROPOSED PATH.PROGRESS HAS ALSO BEEN MADE ON THE DESIGN OF A SECOND PHASE OF THE UNIFIED PATH SYSTEM. AN ELEVATED BOARDWALK ABOUT 200 FEET LONG WILL CONNECT THE PATH IN THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW TO A CROSSWALK THAT WILL BE ADDED AT THE INTERSECTION OF BUSSEY AND SOUTH STREETS NEXT TO THE ARBORETUM ENTRANCE AT THE BASE OF PETERS HILL. THE PROPOSED BUSSEY BROOK BOARDWALK WILL TRANSFORM A LONG-UNDERUSED TRACT OF URBAN LAND INTO A DEMOCRATIC PUBLIC LANDSCAPE. THIS CURVED ACCESSIBLE PASSAGEWAY FOR PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS WILL BE BUILT OF SUSTAINABLE BLACK LOCUST. IT WILL INTRODUCE A NEW "CANOPY-WALK" EXPERIENCE FOR ARBORETUM VISITORS, AND WILL ESTABLISH A PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLIST CONNECTION BETWEEN ARBORETUM ROAD, BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW AND PETERS HILL. NATIVE TREES PROPOSED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BOARDWALK WILL INCLUDE TREES AND SHRUBS SUCH AS ACER RUBRUM, BETULA NIGRA, NYSSA AQUATICA, QUERCUS BICOLOR AND TAXODIUM DISTICHUM, ROBINIA HISPIDA, RHUS GLABRA AND SAMBUCUS CANADENSIS. THE BOARDWALK WILL BE ELEVATED ON A SUPPORT SYSTEM SO THAT IT CAN BE USED WHEN THE BASIN IS FILLED WITH WATER DURING AND AFTER RAINS.THE EXPANDED CONSULTING TEAM INCLUDES THE HORSLEY WITTEN GROUP, CIVIL ENGINEER AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, KIEL MOE, ARCHITECT, AND SIMPSON, GUMPERTZ & HEGER, STRUCTURAL ENGINEER AND HAS ADVANCED THE DESIGN OF THE BUSSEY BROOK BOARDWALK TO 75% COMPLETION. THE ELEVATED BOARDWALK WILL BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ADDITION TO BOSTON'S EMERALD NECKLACE OF PUBLIC PARKS SINCE OLMSTED'S TIME. THE APC HAS BEEN AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN SITE WALKS AND WORK SHOPS RELATED TO THIS PROJECT.IN ADDITION TO ITS CONTRIBUTION OF VOLUNTEER HOURS, APC HAS DONATED $5,000 TO THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM'S UNIFIED PATH FUND. THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM COMMITTEE CONTRIBUTED $1,000 OF THIS DONATION. BTD RECEIVED A GRANT FROM BOSTON'S COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE TO SUPPORT CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PATH PROJECT. WALKUP ROSLINDALE SECURED A $50,000 FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS OFFICE OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM. THE APC HAS ASSISTED THE ARBORETUM WITH PLANNING THE UPCOMING SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AND HAS PARTICIPATED IN QUARTERLY PLANNING MEETINGS WITH THE ARBORETUM SESQUICENTENNIAL. MANY IDEAS ARE UNDER CONSIDERATION INCLUDING A MANAGEABLE SERIES OF EVENTS THAT WILL WELCOME VISITORS AND STUDENTS TO THE ARBORETUM INCLUDING SOME LASTING PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS SUCH AS BEAUTIFUL NEW GATES FOR THE UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS THAT ABUT THE ARBORETUM.$0$0

THE APC HAS COORDINATED WITH THE ARBORETUM, THE BOSTON PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT, THE BOSTON TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT (BTD), THE BOSTON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, BOSTON WATER AND SEWER, THE MBTA, WALKUP ROSLINDALE, ROZZIE BIKES, A STATE REPRESENTATIVE, A STATE SENATOR AND THE LIVABLE STREET ALLIANCE/EMERALD NETWORK. BOSTON WATER AND SEWER (BWS) HAS IMPROVED THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM ALONG SOUTH STREET TO CATCH THE RUNOFF RUSHING DOWN FROM HEMLOCK HILL ACROSS SOUTH STREET TO THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW. BWS HAS REGRADED AND SEEDED THE ERODED LAWN AREA IN THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW, PART OF WHICH WILL BECOME PART OF THE PROPOSED PATH.PROGRESS HAS ALSO BEEN MADE ON THE DESIGN OF A SECOND PHASE OF THE UNIFIED PATH SYSTEM. AN ELEVATED BOARDWALK ABOUT 200 FEET LONG WILL CONNECT THE PATH IN THE BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW TO A CROSSWALK THAT WILL BE ADDED AT THE INTERSECTION OF BUSSEY AND SOUTH STREETS NEXT TO THE ARBORETUM ENTRANCE AT THE BASE OF PETERS HILL. THE PROPOSED BUSSEY BROOK BOARDWALK WILL TRANSFORM A LONG-UNDERUSED TRACT OF URBAN LAND INTO A DEMOCRATIC PUBLIC LANDSCAPE. THIS CURVED ACCESSIBLE PASSAGEWAY FOR PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS WILL BE BUILT OF SUSTAINABLE BLACK LOCUST. IT WILL INTRODUCE A NEW "CANOPY-WALK" EXPERIENCE FOR ARBORETUM VISITORS, AND WILL ESTABLISH A PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLIST CONNECTION BETWEEN ARBORETUM ROAD, BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW AND PETERS HILL. NATIVE TREES PROPOSED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BOARDWALK WILL INCLUDE TREES AND SHRUBS SUCH AS ACER RUBRUM, BETULA NIGRA, NYSSA AQUATICA, QUERCUS BICOLOR AND TAXODIUM DISTICHUM, ROBINIA HISPIDA, RHUS GLABRA AND SAMBUCUS CANADENSIS. THE BOARDWALK WILL BE ELEVATED ON A SUPPORT SYSTEM SO THAT IT CAN BE USED WHEN THE BASIN IS FILLED WITH WATER DURING AND AFTER RAINS.THE EXPANDED CONSULTING TEAM INCLUDES THE HORSLEY WITTEN GROUP, CIVIL ENGINEER AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, KIEL MOE, ARCHITECT, AND SIMPSON, GUMPERTZ & HEGER, STRUCTURAL ENGINEER AND HAS ADVANCED THE DESIGN OF THE BUSSEY BROOK BOARDWALK TO 75% COMPLETION. THE ELEVATED BOARDWALK WILL BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ADDITION TO BOSTON'S EMERALD NECKLACE OF PUBLIC PARKS SINCE OLMSTED'S TIME. THE APC HAS BEEN AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN SITE WALKS AND WORK SHOPS RELATED TO THIS PROJECT.IN ADDITION TO ITS CONTRIBUTION OF VOLUNTEER HOURS, APC HAS DONATED $5,000 TO THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM'S UNIFIED PATH FUND. THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM COMMITTEE CONTRIBUTED $1,000 OF THIS DONATION. BTD RECEIVED A GRANT FROM BOSTON'S COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE TO SUPPORT CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PATH PROJECT. WALKUP ROSLINDALE SECURED A $50,000 FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS OFFICE OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM. THE APC HAS ASSISTED THE ARBORETUM WITH PLANNING THE UPCOMING SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AND HAS PARTICIPATED IN QUARTERLY PLANNING MEETINGS WITH THE ARBORETUM SESQUICENTENNIAL.
