Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The college crusade of rhode island's mission is to increase high school graduation, college and career readiness and college completion for youth in our states low-income communities. Since our inception in 1989, our programs have been building the confidence, academic skills, and supportive adult relationships that youth need to develop their full academic and career potential. The college crusade supports over 4,500 rhode island middle school, high school and college students a year from providence, pawtucket, central falls, woonsocket and cranston. These students face significant barriers to school achievement. One hundred percent (100%) of our programs participants, or "crusaders", are from low-income families at the time they enter our program in middle school, 95% are from racially/ethnically diverse families. Each year we recruit a new cohort of approximately 500 students who are prepared to enter middle school in rhode island's urban districts. Students and their families

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. A complete copy is provided electronically to all members of the organization's board of directors for their review and approval at a board meeting prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Annually, an ethics compliance reporting form is sent to all directors for their signature. The finance and administration committee annually reviews the completed forms to identify potential conflicts of interest. In the event of a potential conflict of interest, no transaction between the organization and one or more interested persons may be approved unless all of the following conditions are met: a) all relevant and material facts that might reasonably be construed to be adverse by the organization's interest are disclosed in good faith in advance by such director and (b) the board determines that the director has made the disclosure and fully responded to questions concerning the matters referred to above and established that the contract or transaction is fair and reasonable to the organization. (c) the board authorizes such contract or transaction by a vote of at least a majority of the directors present at a meeting at which a quorum is present, and such interested director is not counted in determining the presence of a quorum or in determining the majority vote; and (d) such interested director is not present at such time as the vote or decision is made.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

An independent consulting organization is hired by the organization to develop the ceo job description, research compensation data and develop and make recommendations to the board of directors for the ceo's compensation package and executive contract content. Annually, the ceo's performance is evaluated by a board sub-committee, which then makes recommendations to the full board for any compensation adjustments. The review and approval is documented in the board meeting minutes. This process was last undertaken in march 2023. The ceo sets the compensation for the chief finance & administration officer. The ceo looks at comparative data from similar nonprofits in order to formulate compensation adjustments.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents (articles of incorporation and the by-laws) are available upon request, the conflict of interest policy is available upon request, and the audited financial statements are available on the organization's website and upon request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0ONWARD CHALLENGE ACADEMIC & ADVENTURE PROGRAM: MIDDLE SCHOOL IS OFTEN THE TIME WHEN STUDENTS FROM UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES BEGIN TO FALL BEHIND THEIR PEERS IN SCHOOL. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES AN INTENSIVE PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS CALLED THE CHALLENGE ADVENTURE AND ACADEMIC PROGRAM ("CAAP"), WHICH FOCUSES ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, TEAMBUILDING, PROBLEM SOLVING, THINKING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION INTEGRATED WITH LITERACY DEVELOPMENT. IT PROVIDES PARTICIPANTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO TAKE HEALTHY RISKS WHILE FACING PROGRESSIVELY MORE DIFFICULT CHALLENGES; TO LEARN FROM THEIR SUCCESSES AND FAILURES; AND TO BUILD SKILLS THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES THAT LIE AHEAD.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0THE SUCCESS OF THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRAM PRIMARILY LIES IN OUR SEAMLESS SYSTEM OF STEADY ADULT SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS FROM GRADE 6 TO HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. WE PLACE A TEAM OF 25 FULL-TIME MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL ADVISORS IN 35 SCHOOLS IN OUR TARGET DISTRICTS THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR TO PERSONALIZE THE COLLEGE-BOUND EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS IN OUR PROGRAMS. THESE ADVISORS FORGE RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS, ENCOURAGE THEM TO PURSUE HIGH ACADEMIC GOALS AND RUN VARIOUS AFTER-SCHOOL, WEEKEND, AND SCHOOL VACATION AND SUMMER PROGRAMS TO MEET STUDENTS' ACADEMIC, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, COLLEGE READINESS AND CAREER EXPLORATION NEEDS. ADVISORS ARE A DIVERSE GROUP OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHO UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES THAT YOUNG PEOPLE AND DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES FACE, SINCE MANY OF THEM ARE ALUMNI OR COME FROM RHODE ISLAND'S URBAN COMMUNITIES.
