Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 3

The organization has entered into an agreement with an independent management organization to manage all of its activities and programs. Designated members of the board are responsible for the oversight of the performance of the independent management organization.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 6

Any person with professional interest in exposure science and environmental research shall be eligible for membership. Any person may apply by submitting an application and the annual membership fee to the secretary or in the absence of a secretary, to the treasurer of the society. Membership shall become active the first day of the month following receipt of the first year's dues. Membership is for the calendar year. Any member may request, from the secretary or the board, the policies and procedures governing the membership status. The society encourages and seeks broad participation from such disciplines as exposure assessment and analysis, occupational hygiene, toxicology, biochemistry, chemistry, biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, wildlife management, ecology, and risk assessment, among others.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7A

Executive/senior board members are elected through a multi-step process. First, the membership is invited by the nominations committee to nominate or self-nominate candidates for open positions. Sometimes individuals are approached by the nominations committee and encouraged to self-nominate (particularly when there is a small number of nominations for a given position). Candidates are asked to provide brief statements and bios. The nominations committee considers all nominees, and in the event of a large slate, may reduce the number of candidates based on previous involvement, past service to the society, etc. This final slate is reviewed by the executive committee and a ballot is sent to the membership via email. Members vote electronically. The vote of the membership determines the selection, except in events of ties or near ties, when the nominations committee, board of directors and executive committee review the votes and make a final call.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7B

Members vote on changes to the organization's bylaws and other matters deemed appropriate by the governing board.

The organization's by-laws are available on a publicly available page on its website: www.intlexposurescience.org. Financial statements are reported and distributed once a year to the membership at its annual meeting and are available to any member upon request. Quarterly financial statements are distributed to and reviewed by the treasurer within a reasonable time after each quarter.

Other program services: student and new researcher travel and achievement awards-an active student and new researcher committee organizes a special recognition at the ises annual conference for student abstracts and promotes interaction with peers and mentors during the conference and through the internet throughout the year. Ises provides travel awards to ises students and new researcher members attending the conference and presenting their scientific work through posters and abstracts. A poster competition for ises students also provides cash awards for the most outstanding poster presentations. Scientific achievement awards program-ises recognizes outstanding scientists with four awards. Most of these are awarded annually. Nominations for each of these awards are solicited annually from the membership, and the awards are presented at the annual ises conference. The ises awards committee publicizes the awards through the society website, e-mail, and other channels, reviews and selects the awardees, and administers the awards. The jerome j. Wesolowski award recognizes outstanding contributions to the knowledge and practice of human exposure assessment. The awardee receives 2,500 and presents the wesolowski lecture at the ises annual conference. The joan m. Daisey outstanding young scientist award recognizes outstanding contributions to the science of human exposure analysis by a young scientist. The awardee receives an ises membership for one year and 1,000. The constance l. Mehlman award recognizes outstanding contributions in exposure analysis research that helped shape a national or state policy or that provided new approaches for reduction or prevention exposures. This award is presented every other year or less frequently, based on nominations received. The awardee receives 2,000. Website- the public ises website contains information about the history and organization of the society, eg. Officers and counselors, committees, bylaws, current and past society conferences; employment opportunities, other events of interest, society awards, and exposure science glossary, and a section for students and new researchers. The website also includes externally hosted password protected pages available to current members only, providing electronic access to the society journal and searchable membership directory, and allowing members to join or renew their memberships and pay dues online through a secure credit card processor.
