Nami new jersey (nami nj) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Through education, support, advocacy and public awareness programs nami nj fosters understanding about mental illness, confronts stigma often associated with mental disorders, advocates for public policies that benefit those affected by mental illness, and promotes research into the causes, treatment and recovery of mental health disorders.
The mission of nami new jersey (nami nj) is to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness through support, education, and advocacy. We strive to advance understanding and eliminate the stigma often associated with mental illness.

“Nami new jersey shall have two categories of members: members ("members") and, local affiliates ("affiliates") a. Members: member. A person with a mental illness, a relative or friend of a person with mental illness who accepts the mission of nami new jersey and nami, and is a member of an affiliate. B. Local affiliates: affiliate. A group of five or more members which has been granted status as an affiliate of nami by the nami board of directors.”
“Voting members of affiliates can nominate and elect members of the board of trustees. Voting members shall consist of members and local affiliates that accept the mission of nami new jersey and pay the annual dues in the amount and manner established from time to time for voting members by resolution of the board of directors of nami. A. Members i. Iii. A member may support and work within several affiliates but shall be a voting member of only one affiliate for nami new jersey purposes. B. Affiliates i. An affiliate shall be a group of five or more members which has been granted status as an affiliate of nami by the nami board of directors. Ii. All affiliates within the state of new jersey shall become members of nami new jersey. Iii. An affiliate in good standing shall be deemed as an afflliate whose dues have been paid to nami new jersey and nami for the current fiscal year. A list of members of the affiliate shall accompany the dues payment. Iv. All applications to nami for affiliate membership in nami shall be endorsed by nami new jersey. Failure or refusal of nami new jersey to endorse favorably a membership application of a proposed affiliate within 60 days of the date of nami new jersey's receipt of a copy of the application from nami may, at the election of the applicant, be deemed to be a dispute resolved through the provisions of article ix.”

A trustee or officer said to have a possible undeclared conflict of interest shall disclose the financial interest and all material facts to the board. After discussion with the board, he/she shall leave the board meeting while a determination is made as to whether a conflict of interest exists. The decision is made by a consensus vote of the remaining members of the board and recorded in the minutes. Board members declaring a conflict of interest about a matter shall recuse him/herself from any discussion and abstain from voting on that matter. To ensure compliance with the organization's conflict of interest policy, board members and officers are required to sign the conflict of interest acknowledgment every year.”

THE COURSE IS TAUGHT BY TRAINED TEACHERS WHO ARE THE PARENT OR OTHER CAREGIVERS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO DEVELOPED THE SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN CHILDHOOD. ALL INSTRUCTION AND COURSE MATERIALS ARE FREE TO CLASS PARTICIPANTS. 19 NEW FAMILIES PARTICIPATED IN THE PAST YEAR.NAMI FAMILY & FRIENDS IS A SEMINAR THAT INFORMS PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOVED ONES WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION, ON HOW BEST TO SUPPORT THEM. IT'S ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET OTHER PEOPLE IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS AND GAIN COMMUNITY SUPPORT. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HELD 6 PRESENTATIONS REACHING 77 FAMILIES.NAMI SMARTS FOR ADVOCACY IS A HANDS-ON ADVOCACY TRAINING PROGRAM THAT HELPS PEOPLE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY TRANSFORM THEIR PASSION AND LOVED EXPERIENCE INTO SKILLFUL GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY. NAMI SMARTS FOR ADVOCACY IS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS OF TELLING A COMPELLING STORY, WRITING AN EFFECTIVE EMAIL, MAKING AN IMPACTFUL PHONE CALL, AND ORCHESTRATING A SUCCESSFUL MEETING WITH AN ELECTED OFFICIAL. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HELD THREE VIRTUAL SMARTS CLASSES - TELLING YOUR STORY 12/14 & 3/26 AND BUDGETS: FUNDING OUR FUTURE (2/27) FOR TOTAL OF 23PARTICIPANTS.OUTREACH AND AWARENESS EVENTS TAKE THE STIGMA BUSTING INTO THE COMMUNITY. THROUGH AWARENESS AND DIFFERENT ENGAGEMENTS, NAMI NJ WORKS TO BREAK THE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. NAMI IN OUR OWN VOICE PRESENTATIONS CHANGE ATTITUDES, ASSUMPTIONS, AND IDEAS ABOUT PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS. THESE PRESENTATIONS PROVIDE A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE OF MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS, AS LEADERS WITH LIVED EXPERIENCE TALK OPENLY ABOUT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HELD 183 PRESENTATIONS WITH 3,696 ATTENDEES. A TOTAL OF OVER 1,170 COMMUNITY GROUPS WERE CONTACTED. 59 OF THE IOOV PRESENTATIONS MADE WERE TO PEER GROUPS (SUCH AS INPATIENT, RESIDENTIAL, PARTIAL CARE, JUVENILE JUSTICE, ADDICTION TREATMENT/PEER SUPPORT, COMMUNITY WELLNESS CENTERS, NAMI AFFILIATE/PUBLIC AND FSO YOUTH GROUPS). EVALUATION FORMS INDICATE THAT ONE OR MORE AUDIENCE MEMBERS IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS PEERS AT OVER 65% OF IOOV PRESENTATIONS. WE ALSO OFFER EDUCATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS AND SCHOOL EDUCATORS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS. THE EDUCATING THE EDUCATOR PROGRAM REACHED MORE THAN 600 EDUCATORS. THE NETWORK PARTICIPATES IN PUBLIC EVENTS; DISTRIBUTES MENTAL HEALTH LITERATURE AND OFFERS COMMUNITY EDUCATION PRESENTATIONS. THE NAMI NJ WEBSITE IS A PRIMARY SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR PEERS, FAMILIES, AND PROVIDERS ACROSS THE STATE. NAMI NJ HAS WORKED ON THE WEBSITE REVAMP PROJECT IN THE THIRD AND FOURTH QUARTER. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE VISIBILITY OF THE RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS OFFERED BY NAMI NJ THROUGH AN EASY-TO-NAVIGATE, MOBILE-FRIENDLY WEBSITE. THE LAUNCH DATE IS IN JULY 2024..NAMI NEW JERSEY WORKS THROUGHOUT THE STATE THROUGH MEMBERS AND AFFILIATES. A MEMBER IS A CONSTITUENT WHO EITHER: HAS A MENTAL ILLNESS, IS A FAMILY MEMBER/FRIEND, OR IS A PERSON DEDICATED TO THE MISSION OF NAMI NJ. AN AFFILIATE IS AN ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN A NJ COUNTY. THESE AFFILIATES PROVIDE INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES, RUN EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND SUPPORT GROUPS, HOST MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, AS WELL AS ADVOCATE AT THE LOCAL AND STATE LEVELS. THEY FIND UNDERSTANDING ACCEPTANCE AND MUTUAL SUPPORT IN TIMES OF CRISIS. NAMI CONNECTION SUPPORT GROUPS FOR ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS IN RECOVERY REGARDLESS OF THE DIAGNOSIS. GROUPS MEET FOR 90 MINUTES AND ARE LED BY TRAINED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE ALSO IN RECOVERY AND UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE. NAMI NJ TRAINS FAMILY MEMBERS/CAREGIVERS AND MENTAL HEALTH CONSUMERS IN FACILITATION TECHNIQUES. NAMI FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP IS A PEER-LED SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILY MEMBERS, CAREGIVERS AND LOVED ONES OF INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. NAMI FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP IS A SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILY MEMBERS, SIGNIFICANT OTHERS, AND FRIENDS OF PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HELD 161 GROUPS, WITH 1,698 ATTENDEES. 420 PARTICIPANTS WERE FIRST TIME ATTENDEES. NAMI NJ MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS ALSO OFFERED THIS SUPPORT GROUP TO THEIR MEMBERS. DURING ALL FOUR QUARTERS, NAMI NJ ALSO OFFERED A SPECIALTY SUPPORT GROUP FOR SPOUSES, SIBLINGS OF A LOVED ONE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS, AND A STATE HOSPITAL SUPPORT GROUP.NAMI CONNECTION IS A RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP FOR ADULTS LIVING WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. ATTENDEES LEARN FROM EACH OTHER'S EXPERIENCES, SHARE COPING STRATEGIES, AND OFFER EACH OTHER ENCOURAGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HAD 115 GROUPS, AND 1,224 ATTENDEES, IN ADDITION TO THE MULTICULTURAL MEETINGS DISCUSSED IN THIS REPORT, AND THE NUMEROUS MEETINGS OFFERED BY NAMI NJ AFFILIATES WITH FACILITATORS TRAINED BY OUR STATEWIDE TEAM. IN TOTAL STATEWIDE, NAMI NJ HELD 232 GROUPS, WITH 1,815 ATTENDEES, AND 240 FIRST TIMERS. |
