The form 990 is prepared by outside accountants and is reviewed by both the board chair and treasurer before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The medical professional liability association maintains a conflict of interest policy which requires board members and employees to sign an acknowledgement and disclosure form on an annual basis. This is done at the time of our annual business meeting in may, and the resulting forms are reviewed by the president. Any apparent conflicts are addressed with the individual at that time. Adherence to this policy is monitored on an ongoing basis throughout the year. While rare, when conflicts do arise, they are dealt with on an individual basis. If board members have conflicts regarding individual items of board business, they are asked to recuse themselves from consideration of that item. Conflicts of interests are also addressed in the medical professional liability association employee manual, such as outside employment, where employees are required to notify their supervisor before taking outside employment so that the potential for a conflict can be discussed and addressed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The medical professional liability association's compensation packages are reviewed approximately every 3-4 years by an independent, outside compensation consultant called total compensation solutions (tcs). Updated job descriptions are provided for the review, as are compensation and benefits data for each staff position. Tcs does a market review of similar association positions in the greater washington area, and also consults its national database of compensation data for associations. Tcs provides a comprehensive report indicating salary ranges for each position, and also consulting advice regarding the placement of individuals within their job range and the propriety of our benefits package. This review is conducted to ensure that the medical professional liability association offers a competitive salary and benefits package to its employees that is competitive while not excessive relative to industry practices. Staff salaries are adjusted effective january 1 of each year following year-end performance reviews. Ceo compensation is determined by the board executive committee with any approved changes effective january 1 of each year. The last review of ceo's compensation was conducted in november 2023.

THE PRIMARY DELIVERABLE IS THE DATA SHARING PROJECT (DSP), WHICH WAS LAUNCHED IN 1985 AND IS THE LONGEST ONGOING INDEPENDENT COLLABORATIVE DATABASE OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY CLAIMS AND LAWSUITS. THE DSP IS PRIMARILY USED BY MEMBER COMPANIES TO ENHANCE RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS AND TO TRACK CLAIM COSTS. TO DATE, MPL ASSOCIATION MEMBERS HAVE SHARED MORE THAN 350,000 PHYSICIAN AND DENTAL PROFESSIONAL CLAIMS. MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION HAVE ACCESS TO SNAPSHOTS AND STUDIES.
