Of those funds, $625,063 was used to provide direct financial assistance to more than 500 deserving individuals to ensure participation in ymca programs. The rest of the funds were used to provide free or low-cost community outreach programs like livestrong at the ymca, special olympics, saturdays in motion, career forum, and a wide array of teen and senior citizen programs and services. As the need for financial assistance continued to grow, we were thrilled to have the support of 885 donors to the annual campaign in 2013. For youth development the somerset hills ymca offers more than 200 different programs that help young people of all ages to develop the skills and characteristics necessary to thrive. Children in our programs learn the importance of the y core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. In 2013, we served over 6,500 youth between the ages of 0-17 years of age. “We are also committed to providing seniors with programs through which they can stay healthy. “For youth development: nurturing the potential of every child and teen we believe every child deserves a summer camp experience and a chance to thrive. - child care and summer camp youth are involved in our ymca in many ways, but infant through school-age care (ages 3 months through 11 years) is one of our largest program areas. More than 60 children are enrolled in our state licensed full day childcare center located in bernards township. In addition, our school-aged programs last year served over 400 children in partnership with five area school districts in 7 different locations. Over $300,000 in financial assistance was provided to families in need of quality child care services in 2013. Over the course of the summer, nearly 780 children and teens participate in a wide array (more than 20 types) of summer camps, with over $136,000 in financial assistance given to 124 campers in 2013. Additionally, thanks to our relationship with a local farm that donated its staff time and expertise, we once again provided campers with an incredible outdoor education experience. Additional activities in a natural environment include adventure programs, specialty camps, outdoor education, gardening and day camp. We believe in the potential of teens. - youth and teen development a growing number of pre-teens and teens benefit from programs such as service learning projects, tutoring club, teen adventure programs, as well as myriad collaborative programs with area schools and other service providers. In 2013, more than 230 teens joined the y seventh grade membership program that offers free memberships to 7th grade students. Seventh grade can be a critical time when adolescents are faced with opportunities to experiment with risk behaviors. The y program addresses that challenge in our community by providing opportunities for teens to cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. The free memberships allow 7th graders to get together in a safe environment and participate in wholesome activities that encourage healthy living at a young age. Additionally, our teen scene recreation program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students offers students a sense of freedom and a chance to be with their friends on friday nights while under the watchful care of y staff. On average, 40 teens would attend the teen scene events. To provide young teens with a bit of independence, we also launched a teen overnight adventure program. At each event, approximately 25 teens participated in outdoor activities, games, bonfires, and more. At the y, we also had 30 teen tutors who provided free homework help each week to 50 kids as part of students helping students tutor sessions. Additionally, hundreds of teens volunteered on various projects in all aspects of the y. We believe that a connected family is a health family.- family strengthening parent-child programs, support groups, and family nights all contribute toward strengthening the bonds between parents and their children. In 2013, over 900 fathers and their children participated in our adventure guides, one of our most popular family programs, designed to allow fathers to share precious quality time with their children.”
“For healthy living: improving the health and well-being of our communities we believe every child should learn to swim and to be safe around water - aquatics over 2,600 children attended swim instruction classes over the course of 2013. The y not only teaches people of all ages how to swim, but also offers classes to enhance enjoyment of the water such as safety skills, recreational swimming and water exercise. Area schools, houses of worship and other nonprofits use our aquatic facilities for instructional, recreational and therapeutic purposes. Additionally, nearly 80 children learned water safety through programs like y-splash, a low-cost program to teach children basic swimming skills and how to be safe in and around water, and swim school that teaches preschool children how to swim in a small class setting with more individualized attention. Our y also offers aquatics classes and programs for individuals with special needs, including the stars (sharing therapy and realizing self strengths), special olympics, and saturdays in motion programs, a recreational program for children with special needs, as well as the pals and buddies program, which teaches pre-school children with autism to swim. These mission-driven programs demonstrate the y commitment to nurturing and safeguarding all of the children and young adults in our community. We believe in motivating wellness to help everyone lead a healthier life. - health and fitness from the beginning, our y has provided health and fitness programs as an integral part of our mission. The list of programs and services is quite extensive and includes a robust variety of fitness opportunities such as group exercise classes, strength training, yoga, as well as stress and weight management. Every wellness offering is designed with the overarching goal of promoting a healthy balance of spirit, mind, and body that improves overall well-being. Our y has joined an unprecedented national mobilization effort to combat rising levels of obesity, especially among our youth. Collaborations with some local schools have paved the way for our staff to integrate our programs into the schools physical education and field days. Children in our child care programs participate in the healthy u curriculum and enjoy healthy snacks, as well as 30 minutes of vigorous activity each day. The y wellness program geared towards young people includes youth strength training, sports, and yoga. Among our most noteworthy wellness programs is livestrong at the ymca, which supports cancer patients and survivors by helping them to regain their health. This 12-week recovery program is offered free to all members of the community thanks to funds raised through the y annual campaign. The program provides cancer survivors with a place to go for them to build strength while gaining camaraderie and hope. We believe in the value of play to nurture the potential of children. - sports and recreation from classes to recreational leagues, clubs to competitive teams, our y offers a wide variety of sports and recreation activities. Programs, focused on promoting strength and athleticism, are also designed to develop a childs mind by instilling positive values like teamwork, honesty, and fair play. We offer programs for all ages, interests and abilities, which aim to teach skills that are the foundation for future play. As part of our sports initiative, our staff has integrated its services with some local schools as a complement to the physical education programs. More specifically, we provide active programming for local schools field days, intramural sport programming for youth not participating in school athletics. We believe values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for quality of life. - arts and humanities (including gymnastics) the arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Unlike many other curricula where correct answers and rules prevail, the focus in the arts is on judgme”
“For social responsibility: giving back and providing support to our neighbors we believe everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of the y. - adult development our y has programs for adults of all ages, including older adults. Programs include wellness classes, financial development, continuing education, volunteerism, and career and job-transition forums. We run a very successful triathlon training program for women and men, as well as a masters swim program. Additionally, our programs for older adults continue to grow. More than 400 individuals participated in our active older adult programs in which they enjoy aquatics, strength & balance, zumba gold and senior spin. Seniors benefit from the y participation in a community partnership for seniors. In collaboration with other local organizations, the partnership offers presentations to seniors on relevant topics such health and well-being, nutrition, exercise, memory health and more. Seniors in our low-cost drop-in program also banded together to create and donate memory quilts to individuals with alzheimers. Career forum, a free, volunteer-led program that is open to everyone in the community, provides valuable skills and support to individuals in job transition. This program remained a vital resource in the community during 2013 with over 1,200 attendees who learned more about the job hunt process, interviewing and networking to help advance their job searches. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Programs for individuals with developmental disabilities in 2013, the y offered 10 programs for individuals with special needs. The programs include jamnastics, special olympics, saturdays in motion, music and movement, and achievers, to name a few. All of these mission-driven programs are designed for individuals and families with special needs and demonstrate the y commitment to ensuring everyone in the community has a chance to learn, grow and thrive. Toward that goal, our y employs over 7 staff members with disabilities. They all thrive in the y nurturing environment and personify the y mission in action. Our y supports and enhances the lives of our neighbors with special needs by working with other non-profits, as well as public and private institutions such as bethel ridge, special olympics, our house, inc., hope autism, montgomery school and the bernards township school district. Besides the traditional social and recreational activities such as swim lessons, arts, and music classes, we also provide life skills and job skills training opportunities, offering part-time and full-time jobs in a variety of venues, and our snap (special needs adult program) continues offering monthly social events. In 2013, we expanded existing programs that also cater to individuals with special needs. S.w.i.m., inc. Continued to grow and invited participants with muscular impairment who are unable to exercise on dry land to enjoy the water. Carousel kids, a one-week, camp-like program for children with special needs, primarily autism, continued with 60 children who enjoyed two separate weeks of the program in august. Additionally, 25 children with special needs participated in our inclusion program for summer day camp. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we work together trainings & volunteerism the somerset hills ymca has taken a leadership position in the community on training adults through two very important initiatives. The first is mental health first aid training which is designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and to connect people to the appropriate care providers. Our certified instructors have provided an 8-hour course to 200 individuals, including y staff that interact the most with our membership, representatives from local churches, teachers, school counselors, school nurses, and individuals working in the mental health field and employed in the court system.
