Mission

The mission of the Saint Elizabeth University, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity, is to be a community of learning in the Catholic liberal arts tradition for students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and cultures. (See Sch O)Through the vision and core values of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Vincent DePaul, and Louise De Marillac and rooted in gospel values and in Catholic social teaching, the Saint Elizabeth University affirms its solidarity with the poor and its commitment in service to the community.

Governance Explanations

For a portion of the year, the organization delegated finance responsibilities to the registry for college and university presidents.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The members of the college shall consist of not fewer than five nor more than seven members, all of whom shall be members of the sisters of charity of saint elizabeth or any successor entity and the president of the college.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

The members shall have the sole right to elect members and elect members of the board, fix the number of members and the number of elected trustees and remove elected trustees with or without cause.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The return is prepared by an independent accounting firm based on information provided by the organization and in consultation with the organization's staff. The draft prepared by the accounting firm is then carefully reviewed by the organization. The document is further reviewed and approved by the finance committee of the board of trustees and then provided to the board of trustees of the college. It is filed with the internal revenue service and subsequently available on guidestar.org.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Officers, directors, and selected employees (based on their level of responsibility) are annually required to complete a conflict of interest form. These forms are sent directly to the director of human resources who then reviews them with the president and the vice president for finance and administration. The trustees' conflict of interest forms are reviewed directly by the president of the college.

Compensation of officers or key employees of the organization is determined by independent persons who review data included on: form 990 of other similar organizations, compensation survey data supplied by the college and university professional association for human recources (cupa-hr), and benchmark data of peer and aspirant institutions. The director of human resources coordinates the process and houses the aforementioned supporting documents.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

Included in net assets are current quasi-endowment funds whose assets have been designated by the board of trustees to be used for operating and plant expenses, respectively. Included in temporarily restricted net assets are unspent donor restricted gifts to be used to support future operations and earnings on permantently restricted endowments, which will be spent in accordance with the terms of the endowment in subsequent periods. Included in permanently restricted net assets are endowment funds which include assets whose earnings have been donor-restricted for the following purposes: 1. Scholarship endowment fund for named scholarships to students; 2. Geraldine d. Riordan endowment fund for the operations of the geraldine d. Riordan volunteer center; 3. Science endowment fund for the purchase of equipment for the science departments; 4. Seton endowment fund for the operation of the graduate program in education; 5. Maloney endowment fund for faculty development.

PART X, LINE 2:

No provision for income taxes was required for 2015 and 2014. There are certain transactions that could be deemed unrelated business income and would result in a tax liability. Management reviews transactions to estimate potential tax liabilities using a threshold of more likely than not. It is management's estimation that there are no material tax liabilities that need to be recorded. The college has no unrecognized tax benefits at june 30, 2015 and 2014. The college's federal and state tax filings prior to fiscal year 2012 are closed and management continually evaluates expiring statutes of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law and new authoritative rulings.
