Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

According to the organization bylaws, the members have the right to elect the members of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

According to the bylaws, all members (equal classes) have the right to elect the organization's board of directors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The board of directors of the organization is given the opportunity to examine and review the federal form 990 in draft form prior to the filing of the information return. Once approved, the preparers issue a final version of federal form 990 for filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization consistently monitors and enforces compliance with their conflict of interest policy by reviewing responses to the annual questionaire and any continuing disclosures that are made during the year. The board takes steps necessary to identify interests and reviews any so identified. The board makes further investigations as it deems appropriate with regard to interests disclosed or indentified and determines if any such interest gives rise to a conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The audit committee of the board, which is comprised of all independent members, reviewed the ceo's compensation using comparability data provided by the yusa and compensation data from other area non-profits from guidestar. The committee believes that this process meets the irs standards for establishment of ceo compensation in an "independent manner," and would provide a rebuttable presumption that ceo compensation is reasonable. The organization has no other officers or key employees.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Requests may be made to review the document, in person, to the director of finance with two business days notice. The document may be viewed on guidestar.org.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

Primary exempt purpose with a presence in thousands of communities across the nation, the y works every day to make sure everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We became a leading nonprofit by helping people everywhere develop the skills and relationships they need to be healthy, confident and connected to others. Parents desire a safe environment in which children can learn practical and social skills and develop positive values. Kids want to exert energy, discover who they are and what they can achieve and be accepted among each other. Adults want to learn more, do more and live more healthily. We nurture life lessons in kids, foster health and well-being among people of any age, bring people together to pursue passions old and new, and provide mutual support for everyone in our neighborhoods. Our mission the y.m.c.a. Of princeton (princeton family ymca) is a charitable, not-for-profit community organization dedicated to enriching the spirit, mind and body and improving the quality of life. We create and deliver values-based programs that draw their inspiration from our judeo-christian heritage. We welcome and serve people of all ages, races and creeds, with an emphasis on families and youth. Our cause we are a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That's why, at the y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors in 10,000 communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. In 2013-2014, the princeton family ymca counted more than 6,000 individuals as its members and engaged thousands of area residents annually in quality ymca activities, events and programs that nurture healthy, strong children and youth, strengthen wellness of spirit, mind and body, and increase positive social connection and capital. No one is turned away from the ymca due to their inability to pay the fees. The organization provided approximately $511,665 in community benefit (program subsidies and financial assistance) to children, families and individuals in need, and regularly seeks contributed financial support from members and neighbors to deliver programs that support and strengthen the overall health and wellbeing of the princeton community. Every dollar spent at the ymca, for membership and program fees and for charitable giving, is reinvested back in the community.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The organization has an audit committee that assumes responsibility of overseeing the audit process. The process for overseeing the audit and selecting an independent auditor has not changed.

IRS990/Desc0FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT WE BELIEVE THAT ALL KIDS DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE. THAT'S WHY, THROUGH THE Y, MILLIONS OF YOUTH TODAY ARE CULTIVATING THE VALUES, SKILLS AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT LEAD TO POSITIVE BEHAVIORS, BETTER HEALTH AND EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. AMONG ITS MANY COMMITMENTS, COLLECTIVELY THE YMCA IS DEDICATED TO CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AMONG LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND REDUCING SUMMER LEARNING LOSS. BELOW IS AN OVERVIEW OF THE MANY YOUTH OUTREACH PROGRAMS CONDUCTED BY THE PRINCETON FAMILY YMCA IN 2013-2014:IN THE FALL OF 2013, THE YMCA LAUNCHED EARLY BIRDS, A FREE, BI-LINGUAL, DROP-IN EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING AND LITERACY PROGRAM CONDUCTED AT THE HENRY PANNELL LEARNING CENTER. THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM IS TO SUPPORT AND INSTRUCT CAREGIVERS, WITH THEIR INFANTS AND TODDLERS, HOW TO BE THEIR CHILD'S FIRST TEACHER AND INSTILL A LOVE OF LEARNING AND PLAY IN A NURTURING AND WARM ENVIRONMENT. PRINCETON YOUNG ACHIEVERS (PYA), A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOUNDED IN 1993 TO PROVIDE QUALITY AFTERSCHOOL SUPPORT TO CHILDREN IN GRADES K THROUGH 5 WHO LIVE IN PRINCETON'S SUBSIDIZED HOUSING COMMUNITIES, WAS MERGED WITH THE PRINCETON FAMILY YMCA IN 2011. THE PYA BOARD OF DIRECTORS DETERMINED THAT COMBINING RESOURCES WITH THE YMCA WAS THE PROGRAM'S AND STUDENTS' BEST INTERESTS AND WOULD BRING MANY SYNERGIES TO STRENGTHEN THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM SERVES AN AVERAGE OF 80 - 90 STUDENTS, WITH A GOAL OF ENSURING THAT EACH CHILD IS READY TO LEARN AND PREPARED FOR EACH SCHOOL DAY. AN EXPERIENCED AND CARING TEACHING STAFF CREATES A WARM AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT AT EACH OF THE THREE LEARNING CENTERS LOCATED IN PRINCETON: THE CRIMMINS LEARNING CENTER, THE LITTLEBROOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (SERVING REDDING CIRCLE RESIDENTS) AND THE PANNELL LEARNING CENTER. MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, STUDENTS RECEIVE CRITICAL HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND PARTICIPATE IN A VARIETY OF ENRICHING ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO STIMULATE A LOVE OF LEARNING AND READING. ON FRIDAYS, STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARTS COUNCIL OF PRINCETON THAT GENEROUSLY PROVIDES THE IN-KIND CREATIVE FRIDAYS ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM.THE Y SCHOLARS GROUP MENTORING PROGRAM CONTINUED FOR A SIXTH YEAR, WITH VOLUNTEER MENTORS INSPIRING UNDERREPRESENTED YOUTH IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP IN THE PRINCETON REGION. Y SCHOLARS AIMS TO TEACH SOCIAL SKILLS, ENCOURAGE ASPIRATIONS, AND BUILD A NETWORK OF CARING ADULTS FOR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS IN GRADES 6 THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL, WITH SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE FROM ADULT VOLUNTEERS.COMMITTED AND FAITHFUL PRINCETONIANS, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOUNDED BY NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERS TO SUPPORT TEENAGERS CONSIDERED AT RISK, CAME UNDER THE YMCA UMBRELLA AS ANOTHER OF ITS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IN 2012. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0QUALITY CHILDCARE FOR WORKING FAMILIESWE KNOW FIRSTHAND HOW DIFFICULT IT CAN BE TO FIND BALANCE IN LIFE. THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE FOR OUR WORKING FAMILIES EVERY DAY, MAKING SURE THAT THEY AND OUR LARGER COMMUNITY HAVE THE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT NEEDED TO LEARN, GROW AND THRIVE.FOR MORE THAN A QUARTER CENTURY, THE PRINCETON FAMILY YMCA'S CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CDC) HAS SERVED LOCAL FAMILIES, AND TODAY, WORKING FAMILIES CONTINUE TO ENTRUST THE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN RANGING IN AGE FROM 8 WEEKS TO 5 YEARS OLD TO THE YMCA CDC. APPROXIMATELY 85 FAMILIES ARE SERVED BY THE PROGRAM EACH YEAR. OUR YEAR-ROUND, STATE-LICENSED PROGRAM EMPHASIZES THE YMCA CORE VALUES OF CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY. OUR TEACHER/CHILD RATIOS ARE BASED ON YUSA BEST PRACTICES, EXCEEDING THE STATE STANDARDS. WE UTILIZE THE CREATIVE CURRICULUM AS RECOMMENDED BY YUSA AS THE BASIS OF LESSON PLANS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES. YUSA PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR Y CHILD CARE PROGRAMS IN AREAS OF INFANT/TODDLER CARE BEST PRACTICES, ACCREDITATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS, STAFF MANAGEMENT AND RECRUITMENT, AND PROGRAM QUALITY. NATIONALLY, THE YMCA IS THE LARGEST NOT-FOR-PROFIT CHILD CARE PROVIDER IN THE COUNTRY.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0FOR HEALTHY LIVINGWE'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT IMPROVING OUR COMMUNITY'S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. WE ALSO KNOW THAT STOPPING DISEASE FROM STARTING IS FAR MORE POWERFUL THAN FIGHTING IT ONCE IT ARRIVES. THE Y PROVIDES RESOURCES AND SPACE ALONG WITH SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE TO HELP MAINTAIN OR IMPROVE PHYSICAL FITNESS; ADDRESS INDIVIDUAL HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS OBESITY OR DIABETES MANAGEMENT; AND ACHIEVE TRUE BALANCE IN SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY.SINCE THE BEGINNING, THE Y HAS OFFERED PROGRAMS THAT ENABLE INDIVIDUALS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR SPIRITUAL, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING. TODAY, WE ARE FOCUSED ON SUPPORTING AMERICANS OF ALL AGES IN RESPONSE TO OUR NATION'S GROWING HEALTH CHALLENGES: REVERSING RATES OF OBESITY AND FIGHTING CHRONIC DISEASES SUCH AS DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE AND HELPING INDIVIDUALS RECLAIM THEIR LIVES AFTER BATTLING ILLNESS SUCH AS CANCER.IN THE FALL OF 2013, THE YMCA OPENED THE NEWLY RENOVATED JIM AND NANCYE FITZPATRICK WELLNESS CENTER. LONG OVERDUE, THE UPGRADED CENTER NOW PROVIDES A 21ST CENTURY SETTING FOR PRINCETON RESIDENTS TO PRACTICE HEALTHY LIVING AND BEHAVIORS. WITH A NEW OPEN CONCEPT SPACE, NEIGHBORS CAN INTERACT AND BUILD BONDS THAT SUSTAIN HEALTHIER HABITS. THE GROUP EXERCISE ROOM, NOW ADJACENT TO THE CARDIO AND STRENGTH EQUIPMENT, IS VISIBLE TO ALL MEMBERS AND INVITES PARTICIPATION. SINCE OPENING THE NEW WELLNESS CENTER, OVERALL MEMBERSHIP HAS EXPANDED, ESPECIALLY AMONG FAMILIES, WHICH IS CENTRAL TO THE YMCA MISSION. TEENS AND TWEENS MAY USE THE FITNESS CENTER, ONCE THEY HAVE COMPLETED AN ORIENTATION.NATIONALLY, THE Y AND THE LIVESTRONG FOUNDATION JOINED TOGETHER TO CREATE LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA, A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND WELL-BEING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP ADULT CANCER SURVIVORS ACHIEVE THEIR HOLISTIC HEALTH GOALS. SELECTED AS A SITE TO PROVIDE THE LIVESTRONG PROGRAM, IN 2013 THE PRINCETON FAMILY YMCA ONCE AGAIN DELIVERED THIS RESEARCH-BASED PROGRAM THAT OFFERS PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CANCER A SAFE, SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON STRENGTHENING THE WHOLE PERSON, FREE OF CHARGE. . BY FOCUSING ON THE WHOLE PERSON AND NOT THE DISEASE, LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA HELPS PEOPLE MOVE BEYOND CANCER IN SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY.ANNUALLY MORE THAN 1,500 ADULTS JOIN TOGETHER IN PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES SUCH AS BASKETBALL LEAGUES, VOLLEYBALL, AQUATICS, FENCING, USE OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR CENTER EQUIPMENT AND GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES.TRAINED YMCA WELLNESS STAFF AND INSTRUCTORS PROVIDE SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO MEMBERS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES, AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED PERSONAL TRAINING AND GUIDANCE FOR CLIENTS WHO RANGE IN AGE FROM THEIR TEEN TO THEIR 90S.APPROXIMATELY 600 CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAMS ANNUALLY THAT TEACH LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK AND GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP TO HELP CHILDREN GROW IN SELF-CONFIDENCE AND UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS.OVER 3,000 PARTICIPANTS ENROLL IN AQUATICS PROGRAMS TO LEARN AND BUILD SWIMMING SKILLS THAT BUILD CONFIDENCE, ENSURE SAFETY AND ENCOURAGE A LIFELONG LOVE OF SWIMMING FOR EXERCISE AND FUN.THE FIFTH ANNUAL YMCA STRONG KIDS TRIATHLON WAS CONDUCTED TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN AGES 3 TO 12 YEARS OLD AND THEIR FAMILIES TO EXERCISE THEIR BODIES IN A FRIENDLY, FUN COMPETITION, AS PART OF THE ANNUAL NATIONAL YMCA HEALTHY KIDS DAY HOSTED EACH APRIL.
