When children in sponsorship programs grow up, their sponsorship eventually ends. Young adults aging out of sponsorship programs are at great risk. Research shows these young adults, who lack a support system for transitioning to adulthood, are significantly more vulnerable to dangers such as hiv, prostitution, depression, suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, malnutrition, and death. Struggles for food and housing reduce their ability to complete their education. Unemployment impacts their ability to support themselves. We come alongside with financial support, local mentoring, accountability, spiritual guidance, education, and training through our training center, open door bible and skills training centre as these young adults leave their childhood sponsorships and move into post secondary education, careers, and independent adulthood.

“Developing well-rounded adults by coming alongside as they reach maturity requires a multi-dimensional focus. Unicef research identified five key needs that must be met for successful transition support: life skills, spiritual care and mentoring, transitional housing, career development, and church and community support. Our ministry strives to support our students in each of these areas, through projects that focus on the following: food, clothing, shelter, education, and spiritual support. Regarding food, clothing, and shelter: when school is in session, many of the young adults receive room and board at school. During intersession breaks, on belay provides housing and meals for all the supported children and young adults. While the students are at home, the ugandan adult leadership strengthens the relationship with each student, providing emotional and spiritual support for their developing independence. Regarding education: on belay assures that all students have the necessary funds to pay for school, including tuition, books, uniforms, and other school supplies. Students who have completed formal schooling are supported as they select and begin a career through apprenticeships and other job training opportunities. Regarding spiritual support: on belay leadership in uganda encourages the supported students to seek and know god through christ. Enabling young ugandan adults to thrive through providing skills training through our training center, open door bible and skills training centre near kampala, uganda.”
