Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

A copy of the 990 is initially reviewed and approved by the finance committee. A copy is then made available to the board of directors prior to filing with irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization conducts periodic reviews, sometimes with the help of outside advisors, to ensure it is consistent in monitoring and enforcing compliance with the conflict of interest policy. Violations of the conflict of interest policy are investigated by the governing board and, if necessary, appropriate disciplinary and corrective action is taken.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The process for determining compensation of the organization's president included a review and approval by independent persons, comparability data from various national veterans organizations, other midwest social service organizations, and the president's salary history, and contemporaneous substantiation of the deliberation and decision. Form 990, part vi, section b, line 15b: the process for determining compensation of the organization's officers and potential key employees include review and approval by members of the board of directors, comparability data from various national veterans organizations and other midwest social service organizations, salary history, and contemporaneous substantiation of the deliberation and decision.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its annual report, audited financial statements and form 990 available on its website. The organization makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available to the public upon request.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

The mission continues implemented 3 new programs this year: the service leadership corps, the mass deployment program, and the women veteran's program. In addition, the thought leadership program from prior year is now "program support and thought leadership."

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

The fellowship program was discontinued in 2018 to prioritize the service leadership corps and women's program.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

BAD DEBT -33,680.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

There were no changes in the committee's process of overseeing the audit and selection of an independent accountant from prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The mission continues (tmc) constitutes a qualified not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is, therefore, exempt from federal income taxes. In accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america, tmc uses a loss contingency approach for evaluating uncertain tax positions. Management continually evaluates expiring statute of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law, and new authoritative rulings. Tmc has addressed the provisions of fasb asc 740, accounting for income taxes. In that regard, tmc has evaluated its tax positions, expiring statutes of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law, and new authoritative rulings and believes that no provision for income taxes is necessary, at this time, to cover any uncertain tax positions.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0MASS DEPLOYMENT - LAUNCHED IN 2016, INITIALLY AS PART OF THE SERVICE PLATOON PROGRAM, MASS DEPLOYMENT IS A TEAM-BASED PROGRAM THAT MOBILIZES VETERANS ALONGSIDE LOCAL PARTNERS AND VOLUNTEERS IN A SINGLE CITY OVER THE COURSE OF A WEEK-LONG PROJECT. AT THE HEART OF THE EFFORT IS A TEAM OF OVER 75 VETERANS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHO REPORT FOR DUTY FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK TO A SINGLE CITY. TOGETHER WITH LOCAL PARTNERS AND VOLUNTEERS, THIS TEAM CONCENTRATES THEIR EFFORTS TO HELP REVITALIZE NEIGHBORHOODS, PARKS AND SCHOOLS. EACH DAY, THE TEAM DEPLOYS AND EXECUTES A VARIETY OF HIGH-IMPACT MISSIONS INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION, LANDSCAPING, PAINTING, AND PUBLIC ARTS PROJECTS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1SERVICE LEADERSHIP CORPS - THE SERVICE LEADERSHIP CORPS (SLC) EMPOWERS VETERANS OF ALL GENERATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO BE COMMUNITY-BASED LEADERS OF SOCIAL CHANGE. CORPS MEMBERS JOIN A NATIONAL MOVEMENT OF LIKE-MINDED VETERANS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO APPLYING THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE IN UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES TO BE A FORCE FOR POSITIVE AND LASTING IMPACT. THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF AN INNOVATIVE SIX-MONTH PROGRAM, CORPS MEMBERS LEARN TO PROBLEM SOLVE SOME OF OUR NATION'S TOUGHEST CHALLENGES ON A LOCAL LEVEL BY PARTNERING WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. THE SLC EMPLOYS A COHORT MODEL TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VETERAN CONNECTION AND PERSONAL GROWTH WITH AN INCREASED FOCUS ON OUTCOMES AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR VETERANS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2WOMEN VETERAN'S PROGRAM - THE WOMEN VETERANS LEADERSHIP SUMMIT IS AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT UNITES WOMEN VETERANS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO SHARE INSIGHTS, PROVIDE AN OPEN FORUM TO DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES WOMEN LEADERS FACE AND TO EXCHANGE SOLUTIONS FOR ADDRESSING THEM. WOMEN WILL WALK AWAY FROM THIS WEEKEND WITH A VASTLY EXPANDED NETWORK, AN ABUNDANCE OF RESOURCES, AND A NEW OUTLOOK ON OVERCOMING PROFESSIONAL ROADBLOCKS FROM LESSONS SHARED BY THE WORKSHOPS AND SPEAKERS.
