Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Angels for Brazil & Africa is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing socioeconomic development in underserved communities in Brazil and Africa, particularly in rural and remote areas. The organization provides grants to carefully vetted local partners that support education, access to clean water, healthcare, vocational training, and women's economic empowerment, including microenterprise initiatives. The organization operates without discrimination of any kind and serves beneficiaries based solely on financial need. It focuses on reaching some of the most impoverished and isolated populations, often in communities with little or no access to other forms of assistance. Through this locally driven approach, the organization promotes sustainable development, accountability, and long-term community resilience.

Empowering underprivileged communities in Brazil (since 2007) and Africa (since 2018) with focus on girls' & women's education and empowerment. DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Grant Purpose: Built a Dormitory to house 80 girls/Year (2,400 in 30 years). The grant facilitated the construction of a dedicated dormitory for 80 young 7 & 8 year old girls who previously faced long walks to reach their rural school. This initiative addresses critical challenges related to education, safety, and well-being. Challenges Faced: Distance: Girls had to walk significant distances to attend school. Fatigue and Hunger: The long walks left them tired and hungry. Safety Risks: Rural areas posed risks during their journeys. Impact of the Dormitory: Safe Haven: The dormitory provides a safe and secure place for girls to stay during school days. Reduced Stress: No longer worried about the journey, they can focus on learning. Improved Attendance: Regular attendance positively impacts their education. Empowering Girls: By eliminating barriers, we empower these young girls to thrive academically. The dormitory ensures equal access to education, regardless of their home distance. Our commitment to education extends beyond classrooms. We believe that investing in infrastructure uplifts the next generation. This grant exemplifies how small steps can lead to transformative change, allowing these girls to dream bigger and reach their full potential.$10,485$123
Grant to construct 10 Latrines at a village school for 300 girls/year, 2,700 for 30 years. Ugandan girls in puberty often miss school during menstruation due to lack of bathroom facilities. Not having a bathroom during school affects their well-being and exacerbates stress leading to school absence and failing grades. Our grant to construct ten bathrooms specifically for girls at a rural secondary school addressed these educational, health and sanitation challenges faced by female students. By providing bathrooms, we ensured a hygienic environment. Girls can attend school consistently, focusing on their education and their future.$9,138$0
Vocational Skills Certification Training for Unskilled Women: Directly benefited 30 women/year from late 20's to their old age; Indirectly it benefits 90 family members and 1,500 villagers/year. The grant provided crucial support for vocational skills training aimed at empowering unskilled women in Uganda. By addressing transportation, sustenance, and program costs, this grant in partnership with 2 larger organizations, one local and one from Ireland, enabled 30 young women-many of whom lacked formal education-to participate in this transformative initiative. Training Context: The women via a previous grant, had already received initial training, laying the foundation for skill development. Focused Skill Honing: With this funding, the women can better hone their vocational skills as preparation for the local certification exams, which will open doors to various opportunities. Empowerment Pathways: Upon certification, these women can pursue multiple paths: Entrepreneurship: Start their own businesses (We offer micro loans). Teaching: Share their knowledge with others. Employment: Access job opportunities in relevant fields or open their small business. Overcoming Poverty Barriers: The grant was essential because it addressed a critical barrier: poverty as well as provided more skilled resources to the remote communities. Without this fund, these women would have been unable to reach the training location due to financial constraints. Our commitment to gender equality and economic empowerment drives initiatives like this. We believe that investing in women's skills uplifts entire communities.$8,935$0

Election of 2 new Directors, with equal and independent voting rights: Dr. Kofi Vordzorqbe from Ghana to assist with healthcare programs and media and Mr. Jones T. Silva, a volunteer in Brazil since 2007, to assist with our services for the poor of Brazil and media. Jones is related to one of the board members and has been identified for succession planning. Despite the familial connection, all board members serve without compensation and have equal voting rights, ensuring decisions are made in the best interest of the organization. As part of our commitment to continuity and innovation, we are preparing this new director for increased responsibilities to ensure a seamless transition as veteran board members approach retirement. This strategy is designed to infuse the organization with fresh perspectives while preserving the legacy of its success. The familial tie among this small portion of board members is instrumental in preserving the organization's core values and maintaining a legacy of integrity in directorial roles. Also, being younger and more media savvy, we hope they will be able to expand our donor base. Both also conduct vetting of recipient organizations as part of our grant approval process.

Schedule B, Part III

We try to have large donations matched by at least one board member to encourage donors giving. Sometimes this results in unusually large donations being received and matched.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Change in value of stocks donated to the organization on 12/15/2023 and 12/22/23 and held on the organization's brokerage account. Value went up by this amount so this is the ending value gained as of 12/31/23.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Election of 2 new Directors, with equal and independent voting rights: Dr.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4We try to have large donations matched by at least one board member to encourage donors giving. Sometimes this results in unusually large donations being received and matched.
