DescriptionGrantsExpenses
USCA continues to support country of origin labeling (cool) and truth in labeling. USCA members continue conversations with the USDA, the U.S. trade representative, the white house, and congressional leaders on the need to establish a truthful country of origin labeling program for U.S. beef. USCA continues to support prescriptive labeling for meat products imported into the United States. USCA continues to advocate for the reform of the current beef checkoff program. USCA hosted a monthly conference call to inform cattlemen about current industry issues such as animal health, trade, and marketing competition. Information input, suggestions and questions are encouraged and experts in various fields are often available on the calls. USCA representatives attended local cattlemen's meetings and hosted meetings in multiple states. We continue to build a coast-to-coast organization and cater to our consumers desire for the highest quality beef in the world whether that be conventionally raised, organically grown or somewhere in the middle. USCA held fly-ins to Washington D.C. where cattlemen talked to their congressmen and officials at USDA about issues such as ensuring fair market competition, increasing market transparency, addressing mandatory price reporting and packer ownership of cattle, as well as trade, cool, beef checkoff reform, the clean water act, FMD prevention, livestock transportation issues and animal health. USCA has worked with animal health officials to bring forth productive discussions on the issue of disease trace back and has worked with officials at USDA on their proposed animal disease traceability program. USCA encouraged USDA to develop an animal disease trace back system that is adequately funded and meets the needs of animal health officials at the state and tribal level without burdening producers with additional costs or subjecting them to an unworkable system. USCA published a quarterly newsletter informing members of the actions of the organization and discussing issues of interest to cattle producers. USCA produced a weekly capital update email message to members and other interested parties which includes brief introductory remarks as well as various news articles of interest to cattle producers. USCA continued to monitor and make comments on the environmental protection agency's interpretation of the clean water act and supported legislation that would prohibit the EPA from superseding a state's authority over issues pertaining to water quality standards and pollutant discharge mandates. USCA remained actively engaged in this arena. USCA supported the continued funding of the Usdaaphis wildlife services. USCA supported increased access to broadband and highspeed internet services throughout rural America. USCA continues to monitor the federally issued dietary guidelines. USCA supported strengthening antitust laws and ensuring fair market competition by addressing captive supply contracts, mandatory price reporting and packer ownership of cattle. USCA held ongoing meetings with USDA, the commodity futures trading commission, the CME, and other stakeholders to find solutions that would increase transparency and true price discovery in the marketplace. USCA opposed the regionalization of certain regions of south America for the purpose of importing meat as it will allow for the potential introduction of foot and mouth disease within the United States. USCA continues to oppose importation of fresh beef from Brazil due to concerns that the health of the us cattle herd will be put at risk. USCA monitors issues of importance to livestock producers, brings those issues to producers' attention for discussion and review, facilitates discussions between producers and government officials regarding these issues, and helps effect change when producers indicate change is needed on a certain issue. In prior years, USCA submitted a petition for rule making to the USDA food safety inspection service, prompting what has become a national debate on plant-based and cell cultured protein. USCA engaged in a comprehensive overview of cell-based protein which helped result in the introduction of the real meat act. USCA worked with other stakeholder groups and congress to find a solution for livestock haulers to the restrictive hours of service rules. USCA lobbied for eld delay language for transporters of livestock and petitioned for a change in the hours-of-service rules. USCA made a proposal to the beef check-off program and had their proposal approved to fund a "meat demand monitor" to assess consumer beef demand. USCA partnered with other groups for the cattle producer's forum, an event providing technical sessions and information to producers. USCA negotiated bipartisan legislation that would mandate how meatpackers purchase cattle, for the first time ever. USCA prepared a strategy to increase independent processing capacity in the U.S. that helped to inform the development of the white house's "action plan for a fairer, more competitive, and more resilient meat and poultry supply chain."$0$105,000
