Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We create learning gardens that grow successful students. Real school gardens partners with low-income elementary schools to build outdoor classrooms that are used for experiential instruction. The organization also trains teachers how to use outdoor classrooms and gardens to improve academic achievement and health. School partners report increases in student engagement, teacher effectiveness, and teacher job satisfaction, critical measures of long term success in low-income schools. Real school gardens has more than 126 partner schools in texas, maryland, virginia, and washington d.c., and has recently launched a new region in the carolinas. The nonprofit is in the first phase of a national growth plan to expand to a total of six regions and 15 cities by 2020. The nonprofit will reach 225,000 students and 15,000 teachers every day, giving students access to the educational opportunities they need to succeed in school and in life.

Out teach empowers teachers with experiential learning outdoors to unlock student performance.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is initially reviewed by the vice president of finance and business operations and the chief executive officer. The document is refined then distributed to the finance committee for review and comment. After the finance committee is satisfied, the full board of directors is provided a copy to review and comment on if needed. The form 990 is then finalized and submitted to the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All new employees are briefed about the conflict of interest policy as part of an orientation about standards of professional conduct for the organization. The conflict of interest policy is reviewed with all employees and the board of directors each fall. At this time, each director, officer and employee is asked to acknowledge in writing their understanding of the policy. In addition, each director, officer and employee is asked to complete a disclosure form that identifies any relationships, positions, or circumstances that might represent a conflict of interest. The vice president of finance and business operations serves as the compliance officer for the organization, investigating any reported violations to the conflict of interest policy. Findings are presented to the board of directors, including the chief executive officer, and appropriate corrective actions are determined. Possible corrective actions include formally ending external relationships that present a conflict of interest or voluntarily exiting from the board or company.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The chief executive officer and vice president of finance and business operations establishes compensation and benefits for employees in the organization, based on market rate range, experience, and results demonstrated by the candidate. The chief executive officer presents employee promotion and compensation recommendations to the board of directors for their input. Reviews are conducted by the board chair, and documented in the board's meeting minutes. The compensation of the vice president of finance and business operations is established using this same criteria by the chief executive officer.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OUTDOOR LEARNING TOOLS: TO ENSURE TEACHERS IN LOW-INCOME ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE EQUIPPED TO LEAD HANDS-ON, CROSS-CURRICULAR LESSONS OUTDOORS, WE PARTNER WITH COMPANIES TO BUILD AND ENHANCE OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, WE DESIGNED LEARN-FROM-HOME KITS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON OUTDOOR STEM LEARNING OPPORTUNITES. TO IMPROVE SAFETY DURING IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION, WE SHARED BEST PRACTICES ON OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WITH DISTRICT AND SCHOOL LEADERS. THIS YEAR, WE RECRUITED 900 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP US CONSTRUCT AND IMPROVE 11 NEW OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS. TO DATE, OUT TEACH HAS BUILT 156 OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE ALSO ADVISE SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR OUTDOOR SPACES TO BETTER SUPPORT HANDS-ON OUTDOOR INSTRUCTION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PROMOTING BROADER CHANGE: OUT TEACH AUTHORED ARTICLES, JOINED LARGER NONPROFIT COALITIONS, AND PARTICIPATED IN WEBINARS ON HOW DISTRICTS CAN USE OUTDOOR SPACES TO IMPROVE SAFETY WHILE ACCELERATING LEARNING DURING THE PANDEMIC. OUT TEACH REGULARLY CONDUCTS EXTENSIVE RESEARCH AND PRESENTS AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES TO RAISE AWARENESS AROUND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY SCIENCE INSTRUCTION AND THE EFFICACY OF HANDS-ON LEARNING OUTDOORS. OUT TEACH ALSO WORKS TO PLACE STORIES IN MEDIA OUTLETS THAT INFORM COMMUNITIES AND EDUCATION DECISION-MAKERS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OUTDOORS AND THE RESULTS THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED.
