Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The club sponsors a minimum of two train shows each year held at rented venues away from the club. DSRC sponsored 3 shows in 2024 and perhaps hopefully will continue to be the case in future years. Vendors, as well as the club, display, demonstrate and sell their wares to the public. Additionally, the club sponsored 3 Saturday morning yard sales at the club. The club sets up traveling train layouts at the train shows for the enjoyment of attendees. Efforts to this are labor intensive and such labor is provided on a volunteer basis. Direct costs include primarily rent of the venue and display tables and similar costs. These programs are an extension of regular club operations An estimate of volunteer time is at least 200 to 3200 hours per event. The third show in 2024 tool place over several days and was much more labor intensive than usual at about 1,000 hours in 2024. Estimated costs and an allocation of operating costs and other related overhead for 2024 were $12,456.-$12,456
The third major program is to honor requests from the public to attend parades, display layouts during the Christmas season at libraries and other public events. The major cost component is labor which is free as members supply all labor on a volunteer basis. There are minimal direct costs involved. We have traveling layouts for these type events and one is a float pulled by a car/truck for parades. When not in use, they are stored and maintained year-round at the clubhouse. Identifiable costs are a portion of occupancy and maintenance costs estimated at $4,691. The beneficiary of these efforts is the public and keeps the hobby in the forefront. The collective activities in Lines 28 - 30 attract visitors and inquiries as well as donations to sustain DSRC operations.-$4,691
One of our most important accomplishments is keeping the club open to the public as scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays (and other times by appointment) to allow the public to see the operating layouts, interact with club members, and allow the public to seek advice and help on matters related to the hobby. We have magazines and other publications generally free to the public. We have several train set ups for children play and experimentation. We get donations and new members. Over the years we have held classes for school-age groups on how to build a layout hands on. The public can also bring their trains to run, test and have inspected for trouble shooting. Donations of train layouts and train equipment are sold to generate revenues to sustain operations. The club is open to members at any time to clean and maintain the building and to work on and maintain permanent and traveling train layouts. There is very little cost involved as all members donate their time. The best estimate of expenses for this effort is an allocation of occupancy costs and the time to make the club presentable and attractive to the public. Usually there are 12 or more members present on Wednesdays and Saturdays and an estimated 4,000 member hours are expended each year. Related occupancy costs and maintenance of layouts are estimated at $4,641.-$4,641
